Totally agree with you essenbe That is definately the way to go at this stage of technology.

The truth is that if you buy mechanical 6GB/s hard drives, your WEI score won't increase and your performance won't increase. SSDs have just recently broken the 3GB/s barrier. No mechanical HD is even close.

With this particular SST ( SilverStone) and my mobo which in which I have two active 3.0 Usb's shows a possible data transfer rate of 5 GBits. Thats pretty fast!

I thank both you guys for the info.

I'll download and run that ATTO Benchmark app and see what shakes. That Silverstone sst is pretty impressive
and I do realize that there is a difference between "rated at" and "benchmark reality"

Run the ATTO test Dave gave you the link to. You won't get half of that. All of these ports are 'rated' at much higher than you will actually fet. You saw my ATTO test. My HD is rated at 6GB/s. What I get is 125-130.

Mine is rated @ 300MBs but performs @ 110MBs or thereabouts.

Thanks for the tute; I have never really delved into this at this level as I am not a gamer nor am I an IT Pro. Just an Enthusiast with a few machines that I have put together over the years. This one which I'm using now had its debut on or about April 1st. Put it together this past winter.

Mechanocal hard drives are not physically capable of doing the speeds they are rated at. What they are rated at is the speed that the port they are connected to is capable of producing - in a lab under perfect conditions. An SSD on the other hand usually are at least capable of doing real close to their speeds. My Intel 80 GB drive is rated at 275 read/ 75 write, here is the ATTO test on that.
intel atto.PNG
Compare that to either your ATTO or mine. The SSD is a sata 3GB/s just like yours is.

I just took a trip over to newegg to see what a 1 terabyte ssd HD would cost.

YIKES! $4,400.00US

I guess I'll stick to my crappy old Mechanicals for a while.

I appreciate the enlightenment and I repped you for it.

Thanks again,

Intend to install WIN 8 somewhere on this machine sometime soon so I'll see you on the W8 boards sometime soon.

I'm registered on the win8 board. But, you don't need a 1 TB SSD. You can run your OS from a 60GB SSD if you arrange it right. Just put the OS and apps on the SSD and your user files on the regular HD. I only have about 20GB on my SSD, and it works real well. Ask around on these forums, there a lot of people here that use SSDs and are very good at setting it up right. It will really make a difference. The best upgrade you can do to a computer, and you can do it for $200 or less. And thanks for the rep. If I can help, just let me know.

I thought I would post the results of a spinning HDD as a compartson to the SSD;s performance scores to show how much better SSD's are.

Great numbers. Just need a 7.9 on the CPU. Wait, I don't remember ever seeing a 7.9 CPU. (except once, but they were pouring liquid nitrogen in it)

Great build, you never know the might come up with a chemically cold flowing water cooling system that can compete with a liquid nitrogen botched up cooler!
