Are you sure it will only let you shrink it that much, or is that the amount it gives you as a suggestion? Try acronis disk director if you can 'obtain' it somehow, it always works for me.

Ok how abt we start this again

You have a HD, it has win 7 on it and you are trying to shrink the volume so you can run ubuntu right?

1-ubuntu portable will run inside a win 7 window. that owuld save you the grief.

2- if not what are you using to try and shrink the partition?

anything else you want to do ?

Hi Gilly,

Don't think there's anything wrong with your HD.

Appears to be some kind of incompatibility/bug between the Ubuntu installer and Sata controller.

You really need a Linux Forum.

[ubuntu] Softreset failed (device not ready) - Ubuntu Forums
i just googled

ata1; softreset failed device not ready

just before you posted:D and that was the first page

ive actually asked the question on that exact forum with zero responce

thanks any way

LOL. Well you will get responses here - but not sure they will be a lot of help.

Still, you never know - many are also running nix - might be someone with an idea.

I had a problem with XP shrinking enough to dual boot 7. I defragged with Auslogics which showed a system file way over to the right which was blocking shrinkage. I found an excellent program to try called PerfectDisk which will consolidate system files so you can shrink in this situation. But you need to right click on the drive in the PerfectDisk drives window and select "System" to get it to do this. Works perfectly.
