Shut Down - "Operations are in progress.......".....?!

Hi All,

Recently, when shutting down, I get a blue screen (similar to the Windows updating screen) that says "Operations are in progress. Please wait. The machine will be turned off automatically after the operations are complete." The mouse freezes with a 'busy' circle pointer. So I wait, and wait, and wait..... And so does my PC.....!

Does anyone have any idea what 'operations' could be in progress? How to find out what they could be, or even better, get them to complete so I can shut down cleanly?

Thanks,

Jon C

Before you shut down, right click the taskbar bottom. Click on task manager. Task manager gives you the option to shut down anyprocess that are still running. Close 2 of them. If you shut down properly, you know one of them is the problem. If you do not shut down properly, write donw the names, and next time shut down 2 different ones. By the process of elimination you will find the culprit, eventually.

Thanks Rich. Specifically, do you mean killing processes? When I shut down I haven't got any 'Applications' running but obviously lots of processes are.

Thanks,

Jon

Yes, kill the process, to make it a bit more complicated be sure to check to box lower left that says show process from all users (will be the system) you will see a lot more.
May take time but it will be worth it. Just a shot in the dark, but start with the process with the high ram usage.
Of course, turn off everything that you can before you start, windows, Word, Games, etc.

A variation would be the clean boot. Now that I think of it you may want to go this way first, as a test.

I Found Acronis To Be Responsible

If you have upgraded from Acronis 2010 - my problem was Acronis 2014 was making backups on a weekly basis - simply turn this off - go to the "backup and recovery" tab - locate the latest backup - click where it says "schedule" - turn it off using the "do not schedule" button at the bottom of the newly opened dialogue window - then click OK - then go back to the latest backup and click on "settings" to verify. In settings it should say schedule is "off" - then click save. Hope this helps.
