My desktop machine shut down over night and I'm wondering if there is a way to see what time this occurred. Thank you.

it should be under event viewer (just type event viewer into the start menu) under Windows logs>application a shutdown event is pretty obvious because you will see lots of things going into the "shutdown" state, but the specific shutdown entry will be a winlogon event

oops ken beat me to it

Thank you both for your prompt respone. I was able to see the events that occurred and when it shut down, just not sure why. This is a bit frustrating to say the least.

Take a snapshot of the events and upload them we can tell you. Or just tell us the event ID and source codes.

how odd... i can't see anything wrong there,

winlogon code 6000 - the winlogon notification subscriber <SessionEnv> was unavailable to handle a notification event i have this all over my event viewer so im assuming its normal

winlogon code 4010 - Windows license validated. nothing wrong there either, although i am new to this event viewer business... ken?

I know that when I installed MS Essentials, the first time it ran a scan it shut everything down so I set t to run only manually but it logge something for Essentials. When I check the Essentials app, it tells me the last scan was 2/24, the time I installed it.

aha... that sounds to me like a dodgy install, i would try installing MSE using Revo Free to clear out the registry after its uninstalled it to make sure there is nothing lurking there - http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_free_download.html and try again, see if that solves it

the other possibility, is that you have picked up some kind of malware which is messing with MSE so an update and a scan with Malwarebytes might be a good idea, http://www.malwarebytes.org/

lastly, as this is a fairly recent issue, you could try a system restore: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html although this won't fix it if it's malware
