Shutdown issue

Hello all. Around Christmas I got a new Core 2 Duo 3.0 and put that into my rig (previous CPU was a pentium D 2.8). Now, when I shutdown my computer it likes to "freeze" right after the shutdown screen. It doesn't freeze on the shutdown screen, though. It says "windows is shutting down" or whatever, then it goes black like the computer shutdown but my computer is still running, and I have to either wait a LONG time for it to shutdown or just force shutdown via the power button.

This happens a little when starting up sometimes. I have a case speaker so when my computer starts up I hear a beep. Sometimes, however, when I start my computer it's 40-60 seconds before I hear the beep for it to startup.

I reset my BIOS when I got the new CPU just to make sure everything would run OK. I didn't reset the CMOS as I didn't think it was necessary, but if I don't get any working fixes I'll try that.

Going on the assumption that a program being slow to shutdown is not the issue, since the problem doesn't occur until after the shutdown screen disappears, I would guess that the problem might be with the chipset drivers. Did you reinstall them after changing CPUs?

I popped in my CD for installing them and it was acting like I already installed them. I'm not sure if 7 automatically does this or what. I'll take a look right now and see if I can get a copy offline.

Found the drivers, downloading them at the moment. Will report back with the results.

Are you saying that you put a new Core 2 into an old Pentium D system? Do the sockets match up - LGA 775? Board has support for the chip? What motherboard is it?

During the driver installation, when I click "next" to install it, it just goes straight to the installation successful. Not sure if it's supposed to do it that quick. =/

EDIT: everything matches up. the CPU runs great, its just the issue when shutting down and starting up. Chances are it's not even related to the CPU -- i just mentioned that in case it was a common problem with people changing CPU's.

Looks like they don't sell it anymore..

Not a good choice as the chipset only supports 4GB max, but have you fixed this issue?

Yea I know, I got a ton of nice hardware then had to get a shitty mobo because i didnt have the money to buy a decent one.

Havn't tried out the fix, I'm doing a lot of work right now and don't feel like restarting. Going to sleep anyway -- good night.

It doesn't sound as though the driver install was sucessful. When installing chipset drivers, do it in Safe Mode as administrator. Uninstall the old drivers before attempting to install the new. I would have said to use Driver Sweeper to cleanup the old driver install, but I just checked, and it doesn't list a chipset except Nvidia, which I bet your MB doesn't have.

I found what appears to be an Intel driver cleaner from the same place that Driver Sweeper comes from, which might be useful:
