Greetings everyone, it's me again - this time with the second half of the Wake on LAN thread.

I want to powerdown a remote PC simply by double clicking a desktop shortcut on my local machine, and it should be possible using the shutdown command.

I have tried creating a new shortcut with "shutdown /s /m \\[computer name]" with both the name of the computer and the IP address, but neither works. As a check I tried shutdown /i for the GUI and it returns an "access is denied.(5)" error. I've even done this in an open as administrator command prompt, but doesn't work. What's confusing is both accounts local & remote are admin accounts so I shouldn't have any access problems.

As it is, I can shutdown remotely, but I have to 1st initiate a remote desktop connection, wait 20 seconds for it to connect then doubleclick a shutdown pc link on the remote's desktop. This has a 30second delay for me to close the remote dektop connection.

Anybody, little help please?

Thanks
D

That's odd. I don't have any issues using the shutdown command. Are the clients all part of the same workgroup? Are they wired clients?

Not sure if this is possible in a workgroup environment other than setting a "Scheduled Task".

Yep, any wired client will work. It's the wireless clients that don't respond to these types of commands.

This might be a firewall problem on the target computer. I found this on the MS forum. It's the last post in the thread:

Hmmm, well spotted kegobeer... am investigating it now. I had found a few myself but nothing useful. Will report back...

Solved: shutdown remote pc on LAN

Thanks kegobeer, though I spent half an hour playing with my Comodo firewall as per your link, I think the answer was:

I remoted in and did the following at the computer: Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Local Security Policy> Local Policies > User Rights Assignment. Double click “Shut Down the System” and click Add User or Group. Type “Everyone” without quotes click OK. The same procedure must be done in “Force Shutdown from a Remote System”. Reboot.

Sweet - now works a treat. I can abandon the batch file I had half written!
Thanks all (and kegobeer +1)
