I could never explain it as good as Wikipedia, so here's an extract from Installation (computer programs) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
Wikipedia said:
Silent installation
Installation that does not display messages or windows during its progress. "Silent installation" is not the same as "unattended installation", though it is often improperly used as such.

Unattended installation
Installation that is performed without user interaction during its progress or, in a stricter sense, with no user present at all, except eventually for the initial launch of the process. An installation process usually requires a user who "attends" it to make choices at request: accepting an EULA, specifying preferences and passwords, etc. In graphical environments, installers that offer a wizard-based interface are common. However these installers may also provide command line switches that allow performing unattended installations.

Answer file
Some unattended installations can be driven by a script providing answers to the various choices such as the answer file which can be used when installing Microsoft Windows on a large number of machines.

Google Chrome is a good example of silent install. You see no install procedure as you do with most programs. You see nothing in fact. You have to check the version number to verify that its been installed or upgraded.

If you want to make existing software to do a silent install, it is if not completely impossible but at least very difficult and tricky.

sRekcAh,

Its always good to refer each Programs documentation to perform Silent installation because the script might be different for each program but the concept is same. If you want an example this a Knowledge base article of one of the software which i work for How to Perform a Silent Installation of ACT! by Sage Premium 2010

Hope this helps,
Captain

You could open the installation folder in cmd prompt, then type the installer program with /? switch.
Most of the time, it'l return a set of switches or parameters you could use.
If it doesn't, then it's likely that it wont be able to silently install.
But as the Capt' said, refer to documentation.

However, in saying that, if you're in a deployment scenario... you could investigate the option of using an MSI packager.
