Silicon Valley Cops raid Gizmodo editors home

Police broke inot the home of Gizmodo editor Jason Chen and confiscated four computers and two servers, the tech blog reports. Gizmodo broke the news last week ablut Apple's next generstiomiPhone, after paying a source who found the it in a California bar $5,000 for the device. After reading the story on Gizmodo, the raid seems a little fishy to me. First of all, they did the raid at night, even though it said in the warrant that a night raid was not authorized. Also, Apple serves on the steering committee of REACT (Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team), the group that did the raid.

Apple are just really pissed because they didn't get a chance to pull one of their 'quiver with anticipation unveiling' product launches.

LOL I read an article on Steve and his all inspiring presentation rallying the Apple workers into a frenzy all the time as part of his hyping a new product. I'm sure he was ticked off not being able to do one of his famous on stage introductions. Was an article in Wallstreet about how much longer his health would allow his flamboyant introductions. And how it would effect the price of Apple stock. Fabe

As silly as those 'introductions' are (to me anyway) it's actually kind of sad when put into the context that it could've been one of his last few extravaganzas. For all we know, it may have been his last :huh:

Whether it be 'legal or moral', gizmodo knowingly did obtain a device that was essentially stolen. 'Finders keepers' isn't really a legal loophole, or at least it shouldn't be.


It's not really all that different if Joe Citizen bought a TV from a 'bloke in the pub'.

Joe Citizen can claim he doesn't know it was stolen, but when proven beyond doubt that it was - he doesn't get to keep it - no matter how much he paid.

To be honest, I would not be surprised with any sort of stunt these companies pull nowadays.

Is it a case of cahoots gone wrong, or just straight out collusion? :huh:

Realistically though - who cares? It's just a bloody gadget.

Yep. He called into Apple, and they basically told him that they had no idea what he was talking about.

So, for example, if you were to leave your laptop somewhere and I picked it up, and the next day you saw me using it and you then asked for it back and I said No - you'd be cool with that?

I was responding to that Apple refused to acknowledge that the prototype was theirs. If you picked up my laptop after I'd left it somewhere and tried to hand it back to me, and I refused to accept it, I guess it would be yours then.

Let’s look at this from another point of view. Let’s say CBS found the new iPhone and put a story together about it then aired it on 60 Minutes. I bet Apple would never sue CBS or say the iPhone was stolen by CBS. Why? CBS is bigger than Apple they (CBS) have a lot of money and power including high paid lawyers so nothing would have happened Apple would have caulked it up to freedom of speech and then used the 60 Minutes story to help them promote their new iPhone. But since this is some little guy all Apple can do is bully him. Come on Apple do the right thing use this as great PR and stop all actions against the little guy.

(PC: Little guy is a metaphor for a small company and has nothing to do with size of people)

They do make a good point about the issue over at The Register.

Is it possible that Denton has overreached himself? We don't criticise him for paying for stories - we don't do that ourselves, but we're not about to get onto any moral high horse about it. It does however seem to us that the way he and his merry men went about this story was reckless. They've bought something they knew was hot, then they've compounded that error by telling the world how they got hold of it, and what they paid for it.
If they had simply said that the device had come into their possession, then they'd have still had the story, and Apple would still have known it was Gray Powell's...but where's the case?

I wonder if that's what would have happened if he hadn't gone and blabbed that he bought a "semi-stolen" device.

You mean by calling Apple Tech Support? 'Cause that's as far as he went. After that, he sold the thing to Gizmodo for $5000.00. Under CA law, he didn't do what was necessary to try and return the phone.

Gizmodo is trying to claim that you can't raid a Journalist's office. What do you do about one who buys stolen property?

Oh yeah - remember, Apple did get their phone back, in pieces.
