1. How can I get rid of the "Unread Email" part of WLM so my incoming mail will simply appear in my inbox?

2. How can I alter WLM so that I can load an email address with one click instead of
the 3-click method that WLM imposes on its helpless victims?

Thanks, Don.

In the 2009 version there is a Layout/Folder Pane section with check boxes for some items like showing "Quick Views" or "Storage Folders"; but it doesn't even have an unread email section.

A couple of screenshots of the helpful answer offered by roncerr:

Open WLM and select the 'View' tab.
Toggle 'Quick view' on and off using this button:

With it on, click on this button to see other Quick view options:

The screenshots are of version 2011 (Build 15.4.3538.0513). Perhaps your own version is earlier than this?

I'm not sure if there's a way to change to an earlier version. Maybe someone else can help there. Is there a reason for wanting to do that, rather than upgrade your own version to make it the same as your wife's?

WLE 2009 web installer: http://g.live.com/1rewlive3/en/wlsetup-web.exe
WLE 2011 web installer: http://g.live.com/1rewlive4-web/en/wlsetup-web.exe

Keep in mind that whichever version you choose, you can't mix the programs in the older group with those in the newer group. And if you choose the older version you can't use Messenger at all since that program requires an upgrade to WLMessenger 2011.

The wife wants her's like mine the 2009 version since it's much easier to use. Do I have to uninstall the 2011 version to install the 2009 version? If so is there steps to follow?
Nither one of us use anything but the email program itself. no messenger.
Thanks
Jack

Yes. Highlight "Windows Live Essentials" in "Programs and Features" and select "uninstall". Reboot when uninstall completes. Now you can start over with the 2009 install file. Double click it. you can either choose run or save. If you save it you can double click (run) the small file you saved to begin the web install at another time. When you do the actual install, don't forget to uncheck everything except "Mail" since that's is all you want.

Me too?

Thanks for being so helpful Ronserr... I might give the 2009 version a try myself, if I could be reasonably sure that I wouldn't loose the emails I currently have in WLM. I know there are never any guarantees, but do you know whether, in making this change, the emails would normally automatically be saved and automatically absorbed by the 2009 version? Thanks. Don.

To play it safe you could "export" your messages in the "Windows Live Mail" format to a new folder on your hard drive. That way if they don't show up on the new install, you can "import" them and they will then be imported into your storage folders and can be moved from there. If you have been "signing-in" to WLM, your contacts are saved at "contacts.live.com" and should repopulate your contacts list when you "sign-in" to the new install.

I exported my Contacts Book to my desktop but how do you export the Messages to a folder to add to the new Live Mail Program I'm installing?

Somewhere on the ribbon in the main WLM pane of the old installation (showing your messages, not the contacts window) there should be the ribbon equivalent of "File/Export/Messages". You may want to make an empty folder on the desktop (or somewhere you can find it later) to use during the export process.

...there should be the ribbon equivalent of "File/Export/Messages"... on the 2011 version.
