Hi,

I recently built a computer with only one drive, I was wondering if it is possible to install another one and have them runing on raid 0 or do you suggest another type of raid maybe with 3 drives.

I have an asus mobo p5q3 so I can use Drive Xpert technology but a lot of reviews says that the speed of the drives is split in two when using these 2 sata connection (white and orange)

thanks

Renaud

Raid 0 does nothing for security of the data. If you lose one drive you lose the data. If you want security for the data the more drives the better. If on the other hand you want to speed up your disk writes and have a raid controller raid 0 will help.

let us know what you want to do

Is it possible to have security of the data and speed the disks writes?

I would personally advise against RAID unless you have a need that cannot be met any other way.

The instances of RAID failure are more common these days than those of Drive failure

With fast large drives now commonly available many of the reasons for raid are no longer valid.

In a business environment with a need for total data security there is still a need and there cam be valid reasons for the increase in speed that may be achieved.

I would also highly recommend that the on-board or software raid options are avoided in favour of a purpose built raid card with its own controller chip set

Installing a second disk is easy. "recognise as one" I dont understand. what are you trying to do?

sorry my english isin't so good, by "recognize as one" I mean for exemple, if there is no more place on my first drive, will it write on the second one automatically. I was wondering if it is possible to install the second drive so it can be like a memory upgrade of the first one.

Your english is fine. No it wont start writing to the second one when the first is full, but there is an easy way to transfer the entire HD to a new larger one. You can inage the drive and then restore that image to the new laarger hard drive. It can be done within windows, or better still with acronis software.

I hope theis helps and welcome to sevenforums'

My 2 main HDD are Sata but I also run 2 IDE HDD in software Raid-1 mirroring.
It's my drive E:\ and I use it to put all my drivers, software installs and tools. I have been using it for many months, no problems.

Today when I went into disk management to help someone else, it showed both of the physical HDD in the Raid as failed. But it was still functioning as normal when using it in Windows.

So I told disk management to rebuild the array and it took like 5-10 minutes to "synchronize", as it was saying. Then it completed and Raid was all well again.

And that's what happened. lol
