Solved Skype For Windows - Program Not Installed - Important Update?

I don't use Skype. I uninstalled it. Windows Update keeps sending updates and marking them as 'important.' If I run the update I find I need to uninstall the program again.

I'd like reassurance that I can safely ignore these updates.

It makes sense to me, but software has gotten complex enough that I want to be sure that this update only updates Skype for Windows and that failure to implement it does not leave a gaping hole in Windows 7.

If you change windows update settings as shown below then in theory you will not be offered skype. If you prevoiusly had skype installed and are still offered updates then I guess that skype wasn't fully removed.

You are always quick to reply. Therefore I can't add to your already gold-plated reputation; the system won't allow me.

I checked my Windows Update settings and I see I have these times checked:

Important updates: Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
Recommended updates: Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates
Who can install updates: Allow all users to install updates on this computer
Microsoft Update: Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft software when I update Windows
Software notifications: Show me detailed notifications when new Microsoft software is available.


I gather I should uncheck the first box. Your post did not show the last two. I tried unchecking the second to last and MS responded that I was 'opting out of updates.' Should I ignore this warning? The last one looks like a 'request for sales pitches' to a Luddite who is still happy with Office 2000, thanks.

You also chose a different option in the first dropdown where I allow downloads but want to give permission to install and you allow notice of available updates and you choose to download. Does your approach give me more flexibility? If so, will I still get a popup letting me know that 'updates are available for review, downloading and installation?' I'm not compulsive enough to remember to check on a daily basis.

You just need to uncheck this one:

Recommended updates: Give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates

If checked Skype will show up as an important upate even though it should be a recommended update.

RE: The other dropdowns. I don't have them because I do not have MS Office or other MS products installed that would require updating.

I might have got that wrong if Skype is now classed as a Microsoft Product.

Anyway if Skype has been fully uninstalled then it must be down to one of those settings if it downloads and installs with Windows Updates.
