Skyrocketing price of mechanical hard drives

Lol I remember paying £40 for 40gb doesn't mean I still want to pay £1 per gb lol

My first gb dimm or ram cost me £120, you can get 8gb dimms for half that lol

veering off topic, but recently whilst doing some (rare) tidying up, i came across an old receipt from my local small pc shop:



64 megs of ram for £60, back in 2000

My entire catelogue of pc parts is saved on ebuyer lol as its normally my one stop shop! Added it up the other month before I started my latest gaming rig, and I was at £4400 £1100 a year for pc stuff isn't to obsessive is it!?

Not sure what planet you are living on -- but at least in Europe you can get usb HDD drives VERY cheaply -- even PC World in the UK - not the cheapest place or store to buy stuff in but looking at the prices a 1 TB HDD is around 65 GBP / 90 USD.

it wasn't a bad price at the time. of course, nowadays you can get about 12,000 megs for the same money.

I really like OZ but I don't like what's happening there at the moment -- I'm no smoker but trying to make all cigarette packs look the same with a Government defined font and no company logos says why people might be holding off doing business in OZ.

Imagine this going slightly further - the govt might say -- it's illegal to use a HDD bigger than 100 GB on your PC or - horror of horrors -- beer will be sold with a white label on the can just saying "Beer --approved by the Govt" No Labels etc -- so the nice VB bitter you thought you were buying might be "Bud" or some other weak brand.

I'm surprised a great free thinking independent country like 'OZ has got itself in this predicament.

Hiyya jimbo mate it is all down to $'s and at the same time so bloody hypocritical too cigs and grog outrageously priced (not that it bothers me) and plain packing etc and all the health promotional stuff yet they still rake off the duties and taxes on them.

Now it's the turn of carbon emissions all a bit of a joke really.

My muscat is still only $4 a gallon. But it does make your toenails curl. But on topic I have a friend in brisbane who got for me 2x1TB drive both in external astone caddys for $90 ea. Should have them in a couple of weeks if he posts them today. I'm happy.

No idea. Next time I speak to him I will find out. Yeah 2 weeks. I have no mail service and have to go into town to mail office and I only go to town when absolutley necessary. Usually once a month. It's a bloody long trip.

Well I'm miffed! I found some 1tb drives on ebay for £50 and ordered some. Got an email saying they didn't actually have any in stock and can't get any more... Grrr!! Half tempted to get another 120gb SSD now!

Love Seagates wouldn't have anything else myself - had a Samsung for my first build and a noisier thing you couldn't find despite everyone telling me they were the best thing since sliced bread!

Problem is we can't get the US stuff out here - Newegg and Tiger and Newegg have some REALLY cheap RAM I see - at least half what we pay.

Seagate ST1000DL002 Barracuda® Green Hard Drive

Those Green drives are dogs--5900 rpm and they go to sleep quickly. Probably take 30 seconds or more to spin up. Might be ok for backup or little used data but not for an active machine or for the OS.

That's why they're available for cheap.

Obviously, your experience with Seagates has been a lot better than mine. I bought 4 matching drives of their's, and very quickly, 3 out of 4 of them failed. That wouldn't have been so bad, but every replacement that they sent me (4 additional drives) failed even quicker. Since then, I have been sticking with WDC.

Hum sorry to hear you have ad so much trouble mate I had nothing but trouble with WD - externals admittedly and the Samsung 103SJ everyone raved on about was driving me mad with the read arm clattering. The ones I am using now are the blue Barracudas and I yet to fault one, and I have four at my disposal. Perhaps yours and mine for that matter all came from a same batch in the manufacturing plant?? Tried sourcing from different sites?? never know might get lucky

Actually I don't know if you or anyone else saw the 60 minutes program where it was stated that in China there are enormous factories that house lines of production that include one for Nokia, one for Panasonic, one for Samsung and so forth all under one roof and it shattered my illusion that these companies actually had their own dedicated manufacturing plants.

Just out of curiosity why did you buy a matched set?? - not being funny as I am not that savvy - I just thought a pothole was a pothole.
To use an analogy (love them) it would be like buying a set specification model car in say red they would all have the same manufacturing process therefore making the finished product exactly the same.
I used to buy matched trannies and vacuum tubes (valves) when we used to build (stereos particularly) in the old days. So I can only think that they must test each device and align the test outputs to find the very close tolerances they need to match up identified devices with similar spec'd devices. Having said that it would make these devices expensive because of the extra scrutiny.


In any case the price of any of them now is just out of hand as someone else said makes an SSD more attractive - eh?

There was no technical reason for me to buy in a set as I did, it was just the way things worked out. At the time, I felt that it would be better to have 4 500GB drives, rather than 1 2TB drive, like not putting all the eggs in one basket.
