Sleep (fans still running)

I can't figure out why my fans keep running when my PC goes to sleep.

Is there a known bug that prevents them from stopping??

Anybody have any ideas?

That sounds like the motherboard may not be getting the sleep command? Try turning off hybrid sleep, and try both sleep and hibernate.

Check the manual of your mainboard. (maybe download the PDF)

There are jumpers on your mainboard to set to +5VSB (where SB stands for standby)

When set, standby will power off fans.

edit: there are several of them on your mainboard, make sure you set them all to +5VSB

It might require more troubleshooting to determine which component is causing it. Are all your drivers installed? I left a wireless card in and did not install the driver, so the system went into standby but wouldn't wake up, until I installed the drivers.

+5VSB I thought was more for being able to wake up your computer from standby mode using your keyboard/mouse/other peripheral, because it will leave those powered on in standby mode.

Exactly, but that's what preventing the rig to go to proper sleep (S3).

With the jumpers to +5, the power will stay on USB and Fans.
With jumpers to +5VSB, the power will stay only on USB ports you have set to be able to wake up the system in the OS.
The fan rail will be without power.


I forgot to mention that S3 has to be set in the Bios.

I use a Magnum.
As "sleep" mode does not disable the CPU and Memory I would expect at least those fans directly related to those components to remain operational.

Also as modern systems control the fans via sensors the main fans still running during sleep could be indicative of the CPU and or Memory cooling being insufficient to keep CPU and Memory temperatures without the main fans running.

If you want all fans to stop you need to "hibernate" the system, Which of course has the downside of being slower to awaken and the use of disk space

I think i know what it is, i got a new motherboard Asus P5N-D, i installed Windows Seven forgetting to check the s1 s3 setting, now looking at it its set to s1&s3, this should be set to s3 only, i think, but the thing is i need to reinstall for it to take effect, agree??

Hi barman,

I never use Hibernate.

All my systems go to standby (S3), and all the fans are off, including CPU.

Only the memory and in OS selected USB devices stay powered.
I had to set +5VSB jumpers, on all of the systems to make this possible.

You don't have to reinstall after changing to S3 only.

And check the +5VSB jumpers on your mainboard, like I mentioned.

I got it, i went to device manager and turned off 'allow this device to wake the computer' for The Mouse.

Setting Suspend Mode to S3 in BIOS worked for me

Thanks for the info. Setting the Suspend Mode to S3 (STR) in the BIOS (under Advanced > ACPI Configuration) worked for me. Now the both the case fan and motherboard fan turn off when in suspend mode. S3 (STR) stands for "suspend to RAM"
