Man. I cannot figure this out. I have a Dell Studio XPS 1640. Ati hd radeon 3670 with a 7200 rpm HD and 4 ghz ddr3 ram. I additionally run an hdmi out to an external monitor and have a logitech usb laser "cordless desktop".
I have gone through everything I can find in these forums. Incl. the power check magnifyer presentation ( nice job btw) to the Vista every possable setup I can think of link re advanced power management and what not. My laptop used to sleep but would always wake up. I changed nothing. Had the botchted 9.5 install, rolled back to a restore of 9.4 Catalyst and all is great in 64 bit RC 7100. Save this BLOODY sleep /hibernate anything issue! It's driving me nuts. I have unplugged everything and it still wil not go into sleep mode. It is a clean install. Everything else woks perfectly. I have never had this issue (of no sleep @ all) since the beta was released not any of the subdequant builds. Totally out of ideas. Please help me out here:cry:
BTW-I checked for the legacy drivers re my keyboard and mouse in Bios and they are not listed there. I have a Phoenix bios. The latest release from Dell.
Logitech had no answers for me. Maybe the 9.4 restore is causeing this? If so I am trapped as the 9.5 simply installs but does nothing.
I thank you for ANY help you can throw my way.

Check your bios. I had a sleep problem (couldn't wake up) and solved it by switching power management in bios from Auto to S3.

You could also try S1 (though this doesn't save much power. but is better than nothing).

I assume you've also tried fiddling with the Advanced settings in Power Management in Control Panel. Apparently you can also get third party power management apps, but I have no knowledge of these.

Yes, the BIOS is a good idea.

Also, try going to Start > Run and type cmd.

Now type powercfg -energy

This sometimes gives inconsistent results, but may give you a clue. Don't worry about the USB errors, but you can find whether S3 is supported.

Trying for Hibernation now...

Thanks so much for all the feedback. Other than the install of 7137 I have tried all your suggestions and they have not worked. I realized, however, that in the end I would rather have my xps go into Hiberante anyhow. I do plan on installing the 7137 64 build (burned iso @ my desktop) but just need a simple way out of this situation b4 I install yet another build as I want to experiment with Sonar on this version. I am a musician and need to get my daw up and running.
So how does one change the set system to sleep option to hibernate instead? This was no prob for me in Vista sp1 64 but has simply never been offered in the beta or rc builds. Thanks again felllow Win 7 freaks:geek:

I cannot find this in my bios? It must be there. I see that my hd is set to S1 but no option isgiven to change it. I will re check power mangement area.

Ya..I've treid every config imaginable and 3rd part apps are not something I want to rely on.
Thanks for the advice,
J

Interesting, first I have heard of this one here.

No go with the attempted fixes then?

When I went to Control Panel > Power Options, clicked on the Change when my computer sleeps, click the Change advanced power settings, selected Sleep > Hibernate After and clicked on the never entry (which was the setting on my desktop PC). this allows you to change it to a specific time.

just wondered if you had already gone through this option.

Nope.I have tried every variation and every suggestion mentioned in this thread (save the move to 7137) as well as numerous others. It is a strange issue but it has been mentione don various forums for diffearnt machines. My wife has the same problem and she's running an Inspiron 6400 and her problem with sleep only after the x86 rc release.

I have. First place I looked. All I have left to go is the botched 9.5 hd radeon Catalyst upgrade. I had to restore to 9.4 which is working fine but perhaps that setup some sort of conflict in power op mode? It's reach but ...I am fresh out ideas.

I hope this wasn't mentioned, but there are many options listed in Help and Support.

Just type in laptop power.

Sleep Issue Resovled!

Thanks to all who replied to my thread. All were good suggestions. In the end it turned out to be a combination of an updated hotfix for my Ati Radeon (I knew that was part of the problem) and a new Bios update that Dell had just relesesed . I flashed it, installed the new card profile and viola.
Thanks again everyone.
Regards ,
Jason

Great help! I installed W7 last night, 6/5/09, and the Wave keyboard & Mouse would lock up but processes kept running. The BIOS S3 fixed my woes.
Thanks a bunch.

What was the fix for this? I have the Studio XPS 16 with the 3670 ati card. I have latest drivers and bios from the dell web site.

I can hibernate and resume, but when I suspend the resume fails. There is some sort of screen that comes up that says windows detects and error and will shut down to protect the hardware -- It comes and goes so quickly I cant really read it.

anyway, what have people done to get this working? I have win7 ultimate 64 bit....

thanx so much.
