When I try to enter into sleep mode I get what appears to be the logon screen with my user picture in the middle of the screen, my user name below and the word "Locked" below my name. In the bottom right corner is an logoff(?) icon.

It stops there and never enters sleep mode.

few things to try.

1) use the sleep command.
Rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState Sleep

I think hibernate needs to be off for this to work, I could be wrong

disable hibernate
powercfg -hibernate
off

what I have seen in the past is that one of you devices are keeping it awake. Usually, NIC, Video Card, USB Mouse/Keyboard.

My keyboard (MS Internet PS/2) has a sleep button which I have used, as well as the procedure stated above by you.

Interesting! The above sleep command worked. When I woke up the 'puter it restarted at the logon screen requesting my password. That's normal, but the word 'locked' is still under my name. I can't recall that being there in the past, but I'm only weeks into Win 7.

try the sleep command from the start menu, if it works it is the keyboard. I am not sure how (if at all possible) to change this. PS2 KBs are old and I think they may be hard coded with he command for each button, thus it may not be customizable.

Thnx!

This keyboard has software programmable keys:

Back - Forward - Stop - Mail - Search - Favorites - Web/Home - My Computer - Calculator - Sleep

Anyway, as I stated previously, turning off 'Hibrnate' seems to have done the trick.

Thanks for the hep.
