Solved Sleep mode

Hi, My friend has a desktop PC running windows 7. He puts it to sleep, on returning to the PC he moves the mouse to wake the computer, the screen comes to life but the screen is black with a dialogue box saying "restart" nothing else is shown on the screen. He clicks on the restart button and the PC switches off. switch the PC on again and it will not load windows. Why?
