Slow CD Rip Speed in WMP12, W7

Just got a new laptop; a Dell Studio 1558 and wanted to rip some CDs to my music collection. For a CD of 10 tracks of average length (3-4 minutes), it is taking 10-15 minutes to rip the album at 192kbps using Windows Media Player 12.

The slowdown is in the ripping itself, the time between rips of tracks is normal.

I have installed the latest drivers for all the components on the machine, the DVD-RW drive is 8x speed (i.e. should be running faster), there is no unusual performance activity in Task Manager, neither copy protection or error correction are activated, the discs I am using are not scratched or dirty, I am not running any other applications whilst ripping, and the rip speed is seemingly independent of the audio quality I select to rip at.

I'm getting the impression that something is limiting the drive speed.

What's going wrong?

Edit: I have added my computer's specs to my profile, hope it helps diagnosis of the problem :)

It even took 29 seconds to rip a 2 minute 37 second track by the Beatles...

I've never had a rip go very fast. 30 seconds per song sounds normal to me. If it ripped any faster you would probably lose a lot of sound quality. Remember, you have a lot going on. It has to read the disc, send that to the RAM, then copy it from the RAM to the hard drive. Also, don't turn the quality down. Thats like spitting in Lars Ulrich's face.

For good quality mp3s, converting the audio tracks to .wav and then using Razor Lame RazorLame | A LAME Front-end - open source encoding MP3 files - a Windows frontend for the command-line executable of L.A.M.E - with different quality presets and manual settings is the way I went. Time taken is not a consideration if you prefer quality. (of course I am not talking of any convenience rippers built into different media-players with their limited quality settings since I had never used them.)L.A.M.E..

Just been having the same slow rip in media player, it would start fast and by track 2 it would be up to 45 seconds a track again.

I disabled auto rip cd in rip settings and disable auto eject and that has cured it for me, I have also disabled retrieve additional info from the net too, but that wasn't as effective

hope this helps...
