Just got a new laptop; a Dell Studio 1558 and wanted to rip some CDs to my music collection. For a CD of 10 tracks of average length (3-4 minutes), it is taking 10-15 minutes to rip the album at 192kbps using Windows Media Player 12.
The slowdown is in the ripping itself, the time between rips of tracks is normal.
I have installed the latest drivers for all the components on the machine, the DVD-RW drive is 8x speed (i.e. should be running faster), there is no unusual performance activity in Task Manager, neither copy protection or error correction are activated, the discs I am using are not scratched or dirty, I am not running any other applications whilst ripping, and the rip speed is seemingly independent of the audio quality I select to rip at.
I'm getting the impression that something is limiting the drive speed.
What's going wrong?
Edit: I have added my computer's specs to my profile, hope it helps diagnosis of the problem
