Hello,

This isn't truly a W7 question, but I am about to try to transfer documents etc from an old desktop running XP to a new PC with W7.

My old PC is incredibly slow.
When I mean slow, that's an understatement.
Might take a full minute, or more, to open something up.

The HD is not anywhere near being full, and the virus checker says O.K.

Was wondering.

Might this be a heat related problem where an inoperative fan, e.g., might be forcing the microprocessor to run very slow, or... ?

What's most likely ?

Thanks,
Bob

What is your question, how to transfer the files, how to fix the old machine, or both?

To transfer the files, it may be easiest just to stick the old hard drive in the new machine. At least that will be fastest, depending on how much you need to transfer.

If that is not practical, a workgroup will do the job well. Make sure both machine are part of the same workgroup, and there you go.

As for the rogue machine... Try cleaning it out with CCleaner. Download a copy of Malwarebytes (the free version, of course) and do a scan.

Check out some performance info in the Task Manager, and take note of the CPU and RAM usage.

If you are concerned about your temperatures, download a copy of Speedfan. If you would like, post the temps, and we will tell you if they are reasonable.

Does anything show in Event Viewer on the old XP system?

Some problems cause Windows to wait for unresponsive hardware.
