Solved Slow Start Up

Hiyya jamtin mate we need some specs on that motherboard before anything can be said about the BIOS update. Just as a general rule updating the BIOS can be fraught with problems especially if the update wrecks the BIOS chip.

So run Speccy and see what the motherboard model actually is first because we need to find the chipset version / model.

Oops sorry jamtin forgot that one :o now mate the board is a fairly elderly one and the latest BIOS updates are for Vista machines and date to 2006 - there doesn't seem to be one listed for 7.

So I don't know what the go is there my friend as I said previously updating or flashing the BIOS can possibly render your machine (board) useless. The BIOS is actually a small chip on the board that houses all the instructions for the various component parts when you boot the machine. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BIOS
So I am just wondering why you want to update the BIOS - this is a list of the Vista 32 bit OS updates but mate if it aint broke don't try to fix it.

ASUSTeK Computer Inc. -Support- Drivers and Download A8V-E SE

I do notice though that you have only 2GB RAM installed and 4GB would be better but I am going to say that to do that it (DDR) will be difficult as it maybe be hard to find and / or expensive if you do.

I don't know what else you can do as this machine is perhaps running at it's maximum capacity wit 7 installed.

Hi James. I have just noticed that you are using AVG security. You will find that the general advice re AVG is to get rid of it and run MSE or something else. Once you have sorted your initial problem it may be worth sorting your AV out.

Welcome to the forum btw mate. I'm new here and the advice I have received so far has been brilliant. I try and spend at least 1 hour here every day if I can, just to keep up to speed.

Andy.

Yep Andy I saw that too mate but didn't want to pile on too much in bad tidings:)

If you are still watching jamtin then have a look at this because if you ask what is the best you will get snowed under with advice.

The Best Free Security Software for PC and the sub entry

Probably the Best Free Security List in the World

Of course yu might want to go with paid for and in that case although quite a few will disagree with me I would steer clear of Norton, McAfee, AVG, and Trend - that's only because I have had some nasty experiences with those:)

Thanks for pointing that out about AVG. Funny. I have had it recommended to me by some people who I think are in the know. It's nothing to me to p1ss it off. I applied for a job as a youth worker(that's what I do) and the advertiser needed to know that I had a security system in place so I chucked $60 or so at AVG just to have it to show them. What are the problems with AVG? I have been using the free version for years and have had very little trouble with it.! Anyway, it's Saturday arvo and I have some of the best beer I have ever brewed sitting out the back waiting for me. Haveagoodweekend!

Ah well nothing jamtin mate it is up to you what you use I don't think anyone is trying to get you to use something else just in general a lot of people have had some bad experiences and issues with it myself included. These have included slowing up the system to giving out heaps of false positives

I think if you read any of the test sites that review AV's in general have a very dim view of AVG.

Just take a wander through these mate AV-Comparatives - Independent Tests of Anti-Virus Software & www.matousec.com: Security software testing, analyses, research and reviews.

Anyway it is worth having a look at what you are using my friend and see what else is available. I have to say again that a lot depends on the machine user's habits and as to how proactive and sensitive they are to the rot that is poured out each and every day. I know a lot of my co workers have very little regard for what they download and that keeps me busy enough trying to make the machines usable again:D

Anyway enjoy the brew my friend and if you feel like a change then there's always that list I posted to have a look at. :picnic:
