Slow / unresponsive while extracting or burning

Hello,

While extracting (large) zip/rar files, the PC is not very responsive: I can hardly switch application, and web browsing, for example, is almost impossible. I used winrar and switched to 7zip, without much improvement.

Maybe unrelated, but another occurrence of slow-performance happens when I burn a DVD image (with imgburn) and I open/switch to another application: the buring buffer/cache drops to zero.

I have this:

DFI Lan Party JR 790GX-M2RS
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 920
G.Skill PK 4GB (2x2GB) DDR2 PC2-8500C5
ASUS Radeon HD 3450
Hitachi Deskstar 750GB SATA-II

This did not happen on the same PC when I had Vista installed.

Any idea where to start troubleshooting? :(

Thanks!

Check that your memory is sufficient. Is it all being utiliized? Take the memory diagnostic test. Just type that phase in search and then click on memory diagonostic.
After a problem occurs, type event viewer in search and look for errors.
Make sure that all your drivers are up to date, per the device manager.
Try disabiling your fire wall and A/V

Thanks for the reply. Drivers are updated. Memory installed is 4GB, available during (for example) RAR extract with 7-Zip is 2GB.
Disabling AV (Avira) does not have any effect. (Note that Avira can't be closed, just disabled). Firewall is not used. Mem test showed no issues.

Any other idea or diagnostig tool?

Thanks,
