Slow wireless

Hi, basically i have slow wireless internet. It works fine in Vista, Ubuntu, slackware, XP, and in Windows 7 which i upgraded from vista, but in a fresh install of win7 professional i get about half the speed i should.

I am using a Netgear WG111T wireless card to connect to a BTHomeHub for internet. After a restart of the router the downstream speed has gone up by 1mb, but my download speed hasn't increased (from numerous sites, speedtests, etc).

Broadband connection (as listed on router page (IP Address)) is:

Downstream 1,888 Kbps

Upstream 448 Kbps

Yet speedtest shows 0.7mb/s down

0.3mb/s up.

I know netgear fail with 64bit drivers still but this worked fine in vista, and upgraded win7, so is there something i'm missing?

After much playing about and testing with other machines it seems the speed is the same at the moment, except linux is offering slightly higher wireless speed and wired speed than any windows versions :S

Wired + wireless connection to router give less than it should, with no firewalls, no security, WPA, WEP(open) connections.

It was 30KB/s last night, no higher than 90KB/s this morning.

Good ol' BT throttling again? Supposed to be unlimited.

I'd be glad to help you out today. Now, there are many reasons why you could be experiencing this problem, so it'd help if we could narrow it down a little. How long have you had Windows 7 for? People have had this problem in the past and have been able to solve it by simply giving it time. Windows updates should eventually clear up the issue.

Hi, well i tried it a while ago but installed 64bit professional 2 days ago. Prior to that i had upgraded vista to it and had been running it fine at a good speed.

To be honest i now believe it's BT's poor service. Upon reading terms and conditions once a router is reset and the down/up stream changes, it has to stay like that for 3 days until they'll update your actual available speed. Not sure why it originally dropped to 844kbps, after one restart it didn't move, but this morning after a restart on router it went up to 1888kbps.

I have all the latest updates, but i can tell you it took a while at 20-30KB/s last night!
Took me 2 hours almost to download Nvidia drivers

One more thing i will add:

Netgear WG111T is a 108mbps card, it is showing as only connecting at 54mbps on Win7 at the moment. Also i was unable to use the netgear configuration utility -- everytime i ran the exe it popped up for a sec, then instantly closed. It remained open as a process but wouldn't stay on the screen so i could check if its set to 108mbps, or even set the network details. Not sure how todo this in Windows wireless zero config tool... i'm not very experience in troubleshooting wireless in Windows

Well, it's good to hear that your speed is back up to normal. At least, now we know that the issue is with the Netgear WG111T device. I'll do some more research on potential causes for it's interface to be closing and try to come up with a reason. Good luck.

'tis bizzare indeed. I'm not too fussed about the software working or not as i have been running ubuntu for the last 6 months which involved wrapping the windows driver using ndiswrapper, and not using any netgear software (as they neither support 64bit, or linux for their end-user cards).

A final addition: Got in contact with "Indian" Telecom, (formerly known as BT) and they said there was a fault on the line. Somehow 3hours later when i asked about it they said they had fixed it, but wouldn't say the nature of it. Put the IP profile at 1.5mpbs, after 3 or 4 days of the router resyncing with the dslam it eventually evened itself out and has been connecting at 1.5mpbs for over 2 weeks now.
