sluggish mouse

Hi guys
This is my first post here:huh:
When I take my machine out of sleep mode the mouse is very sluggish. I have to unplug the mouse then plug it back in again to get it to work, any suggestions?

Is this a new problem? Did you just recently install Windows 7? It may be a power saving feature that disables USB related software support for devices. Try exploring msconfig or the power saving options and see if you find a solution there.

Welcome to the seven forums There are some real experts here (I'm not one of them.) who will be able to help you.

Although the size of your hard drive has nothing to do with this problem since Win7 requires more than 1 G, you might want to update the size of your hard disk in your profile.

Now to your problem and this is very important: Was this problem there from the very start? Have you always had this problem? Immediately after you installed Win 7 or started using your computer if Win 7 was already installed, was the problem there?

Have you been creating restore points prior to any installations or changes?

Frequent restore point creation makes returning your system to a time when the system worked very easy.

Do you know what a restore point is? Do you know how to create a restore point? Do you know how to restore your system to an earlier restore point?

Hope all of the questions haven't frightened you but restore points are a life saver. Testing features and softwares many time a day means that restore points are an absolute necessity for me. They have saved me more times than I can count.

Welcome to Seven Forums.Since it has been brought up.
To create a restore Point. click on the start orb>type create restore point in search box. A window will pop up>under system protection make sure the drive you want to create the restore point on has this protection on>select the drive.At the bottom of the pop up will be create>click on it>another window will pop up>write whatever you want to call the restore point. I usually put the date and time and sometimes what program I'm about to install. Then click create. It takes a little while then it should say restore point successful. Now you have a place to return your system back to should you not like the program or a problem should arise.
As for the mouse, you can go to control panel and click on mouse, from their you can select speed, cursor and many other options. However since this is a laptop it could be a power saving mode, but I've not experienced it with my laptop. So...?Fabe

Thanks guys for your input and warm welcome,
I have a desktop system and the mouse is a USB Microsoft optical device. The system is new and pre built, which is a first for me, I normally build my own. The sluggish mouse response from wake up has been there from day one.
I do understand restore points and will endeavour to make use of them from now on when I change something. I will try out your suggestions and post back on how things go.

Thanks for the additional info.

In the old days, and even nowadays, mouse problems were most frequently caused by video drivers. Be sure and go to the website of your computer manufacturer and check for the latest drivers for your computer.

Another frequent cause of sluggish mouse movement at startup time is due to the number of programs which are autostarting at that time. Here your antivirus software and its settings can cause problems.

What you can try is to uncheck all programs listed as starting up at startup time execpt for those from Microsoft and those from your computer manufacturer.

I'm referencing the startup list given by the Startup tab of MSCONFIG.

You can uncheck and then at a later time come back and check those which you would like to get a head start by starting at startup time. On my system, that list is very short because I like to power on and not have a sluggish mouse or other slow responses at start up time.

WIN key | type MSCONFIG | ENTER key | STARTUP tab | uncheck unnecessary programs | APPLY button | OK button | and RESTART YOUR COMPUTER.

The WIN key is the one with that funny looking wavy flag on it.

When the condition of the sluggish mouse presents, check Task Manager for an app/process with high CPU usage. My current install has 2 apps that cause a similar (and transient) affect. The most frequent offender of high CPU usage (on my install) is MS Security Essentials.

The condition is short-lived.

Same kind of problem here too with a logitech wireless mouse/keyboard.

Worked perfect in Vista. In Win7, since day 1, sluggish mouse, kb is ok. Tried re-pairing the wireless mouse, same problem. Std USB Mouse works fine!

An update on the sluggish mouse issue
I have tried:
Swapped the mouse several times and got different results?
Updating the mouse/keyboard to 64bit driver from MS
According to Win7 all drivers are up to date
However on investigating the video/audio drivers (suggested by Karlsnooks, and I thank you) there is a problem with the driver for the monitor Acer T230H an error code 10. The monitor, including its touch facilities all seem to work fine. I am investigating that issue on another thread here. I will keep all who are interested up to date on how I go.
