Hello there

I hope this post is in the right sub-forum.

I recently built my own gaming rig and have noticed its performance is slow, much slower than it should be, given the components. My old rig seems to outperform it in every way! When I say slow, I mean basic navigation through Windows has noticeable delays/lag, and I experience lackluster FPS when playing games it should be able to handle without breaking a sweat.

My setup:
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UD5H
CPU: Intel i5-3330
GPU: Geforce GTX 680 (SOC) 2GB (Gigabyte)
RAM: 16GB DDR3 1600 mhz (Corsair)
PSU: Corsair HX-650 (650w)
Boot disk: Samsung 840 series 250gb SSD

Windows is up to date. My drivers are up to date (when right clicking and trying to update through Device Manager). I don't know what else I can do to optimise the system further. :(

I attach my DxDiag should that be of any assistance.

Thank you kindly,

Adam H

Very nice system. On a new system the first thing I would check is the temps. If by chance the system is throttling back because of temps. Double check and make sure every thing is hooked up properly. Example: Cooling fans working properly, cpu and cpu cooler mounted properly.

To put it in a simple way. One must know the temps of a new build to make sure one hasn't made a toaster by mistake. From there you can continue looking for the problems safely.
What cpu cooler are you using?

Thank you for joining the Forum; Welcome.

If you do a Google on the driver version which is - Driver Version: 9.18.13.2018. You will see other people with GTX680's having performance issues.

Windows is up to date. My drivers are up to date (when right clicking and trying to update through Device Manager).

Nvidia drivers are best downloaded direct from Nvidia. Some people have had issues with the video drivers from Windows Update.

Thank you for the replies, guys.

My CPU temperature on startup is a cool 30C. I haven't tried monitoring temp while in-game but will install a program to do that and report back.

McRuff - I should've clarified my comment about 'my drivers' to mean my mobo/USB controllers and everything else except for the GPU. I always get GPU drivers straight from the source. ;)

Okay, I've installed Core Temp.

Right now the only things I have open are this Firefox window and 2.37gb file which is extracting from a .rar.

Temperatures across all four cores are between 48-52 C. And this little extraction is apparently going to take 55 minutes.

There must be something wrong here?

Yeah, was already using High Performance.

I just tested another game, Torchlight II. This should run like smooth, creamery butter, but it's pretty choppy. Hmmmmmm.

What are you extracting the 2.73 gb from? Also keep track of the actual time it takes not the suggested time to complete.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I discovered that my old rig actually had a slightly better CPU (i7-2600) so the new rig wasn't 'better in every way', as I originally thought.

I found that doing a clean boot seemed to stop the excessive CPU use but, as I was also faced with an interminable number of BSOD issues, I decided to upgrade my CPU (to an i7-3770K) and do a fresh install of Windows 7.

Needless to say, that's solved all my problems. I was more diligent with the amount of programs I installed, and did it in a more piecemeal fashion this time around. CPU use sits at 0-2% now, as it ought to.

Thanks again.
