Small network issues. Wired-has internet, can't "see" other computers

We have a small network in our office. Our "server" is actually an old PC with a large hard drive running Windows Home Premium x32. It is wired to our wireless router. We have 4 computers and a plotter that are connected wirelessly to our router. We limit connection to the router by mac address. The other computers run various versions of Win 7. There have been no issues until we replaced a computer with a new one running Windows Home Premium x64. We were able to log on to the router wirelessly, but did not have access to internet or other computers / plotters on the network. We tried hard wiring the computer to the router and were able to gain internet, but no access to other network computers. I'm a little limited in my experience with network issues; I've been fortunate that everything happened to work up until now. What would be a good way of troubleshooting the issue? What other information about our setup would help?

Have you already tried a Power Cycle?

If that didn't help at all, take a snap shot of the Mac Filtering page, paste it on to MS Word or Wordpad and save it, then Disable Mac filtering for now. Test your internet connectivity after. If all goes well, then you may do the Mac filtering again.

Still No-Go, proceed to update your router's firmware. You may download the firmware from the Manufacturer's site.

An udate will be appreciated.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I would have responded sooner but I have been out of town since noon on Friday.

We had "cycled" the modem and router a time or two, but not to the extent that the "power cycle" entailed. So, we tried that first, and it didn't help. We then disabled the MAC filter and still did not have any luck. Also, before we re-established the MAC filter, we updated the firmware for both the wireless card, and the router. Still no go.

I have heard that Home Premium might be the culprit. We have multiple instances of Home Premium on our network, and I found that that particular OS limits the number of computers you can put on a network. Have you heard that?

I am thinking of upgrading to Professional and see if that helps. If it doesn't, we'll still have Pro on the computer, which is what I wanted in the first place.

If you're a business, you need to consider hiring a part time sysadmin or a consultant. What you don't know you don't know about networking and computer security can cost you a lot of money.

Not to mention, of course, that relying on the support of free forums to keep your business going is a rather questionable business strategy. Anything that's vital to your operations should be in-house


Chances are, you need to disable homegroups on your "server" and enable password protected sharing.
