Smoking near Mac voids warranty

In a rather bizarre situation reported on The Consumerist website, it turns out that smoking near your Apple computer is a bio hazard and voids the warranty.

There is very little doubt as to the repercussions of smoking a pack of ten per day, however one would never think it would affect a laptop's warranty. If you have a Mac, it does.

I think you can safely say all animal research laboratories, where they get Beagles or Chimpanzees to chain smoke, will shortly be moving up to Windows 7 now...

After reading the article and thinking for a bit I can agree to them a bit. See smoking causing a tar build up which slows down the fans or stops them from working correctly. After working on thousands of machine in which people smoked a company I worked for started to charge to replace fans of machines that where under warranty due to smoking. I believe my boss called it an abuse of equipment which voided the warranty. I made sure that each customer when they came back to pick up the machine would get back their tared items and when they would start to complain about paying i just handed over the item and say tell me is the normal usage ware?? 99% of the time they just paid and walked out. I did have a few say well I wanted a reason to stop smoking in the house if this is how my fan in the computer looks just think about my tv or other items.

Doesn't any use or behavior that "voids the warranty" have to state that in either paperwork signed or on the product itself?

Read any EULA and you will see after five minutes you cant remember what you read a few seconds ago. Also we have seen that ever state can rule on what should and shouldnt be included in the agreements. So in one state its fair the other its not. So they will class this as an external environment factor that voids the warranty.

And Starbucks (where guys with very tight T-shirts and Macs go to see other guys in very tight T-shirts with Macs) smoking is not allowed.

I also think the target audience (middle to high income, educated) is less likely to smoke. I doubt Trailer parks have too high of a a Mac usage.

I live in a trailer park thank you very much. We are not poor, just not rich.

Anyways. Anything can cause damage to a PC, even using it. Me for example, HP threatened to NOT repair my touchpad left/right click buttons because they both broke during NORMAL use. Apparently normal use is in violation of the 1 year standard warranty?

Companies need to calm down with what does and does not void warranties.

Companies are so greedy they don't want to replace/fix the stuff they make

The sad thing is that one would be considered clean to the ones I have worked on. Damn no wonder I have "smokers cough" and I don't smoke lol.

You should see the insides of a computer which has been used in a chip shop, dripping with sticky grease... and add to that a little dust, and you have something akin to mortar sticking to everything.

However if there is no specific inclusion of smoking in the warranty terms Apple are taking the p*ss and need their ass kicked. In fact it's so ridiculous that I'd say they'll get their come-uppance at the hands of the courts or consumer standards agencies.

You cannot inhale solid residues from tobacco, such as those which might stick to a machines innards. You're talking of a microscopically thin layer of residue that is so negligible as to be absurd to worry about.

Some of the chemicals used by Apple and others in mainboard assembly, like PCB's and lead, are actually far more dangerous LOL!

Isn't a computer considered a bio hazard in itself? I mean it has to be disposed of as hazardous waste right? I can understand the concern of working on a system as pictured above. But isn't flux in soldering also a bio hazard. My point being is their has to be plenty of cleaning fluids, solvents, and other hazardous materials in the shop to begin with. So to me on top of it not being listed as voiding the warranty in the contract. It's not even a legitimate excuse. It's just another way to get out of supporting your product. Apple please continue down this road. As they all walk around in their highly contaminated dry cleaned suits. Fabe
