software for home network

can someone suggest a good, conservatively priced, or freeware version control software. Maybe someone knows a generic script I can use? I'm trying to supplement some security lacking, and I'd like to be able to monitor the content of documents and programs ideally.

secondly does anyone know a good sandboxing software again, conservatively priced or free? I'm not sure if there is a good way to sandbox programs while they run in windows 7 (i'm relatively new to the operating system; in general).

i'm trying to build a secure gateway for a home network, seperate from an existing home network. the two software tools named above are part of my strategy.

in short what I'd like to do is make a firewall with dedicated hardware. that sends information to a file hosting drive after being virus checked, version control analysed and then i can use the files.

the entire point is to prevent network intrusion or other comprimises handed down from the internet. it's just a hobby activity at this point, so it's not a matter of great urgency and I'd like to really know what i'm implementing so I can make the best choices.

is there a way to use the index, tiff, and ocr in as a means of version control? the only sandbox feature I can see in windows features is the ability to use virtual disks via the new administrative tools. I still don't see it stopping programs from making changes before they try, only as a means of keeping those changes from my hard disk if I do some renaming, and use symbolic linking to reference resources and what not.

In my opinion, the best way to sandbox in 7 is to use virtual machines;
