I'll take a stab at it. :geek:

Software which much be installed to run properly writes data to the Windows Registry and often makes additional folders for its own use in other locations on the hard drive. You can't just copy the main folder, for instance Microsoft Office from the Program Files folder, to another computer and have it work.

Portable, or "standalone" software is self-contained and doesn't depend on any Registry entries or other folders to work right. You can copy that all over the place and it will run just fine.

Some software is released in both forms, meaning the portable version can be run off a thumb drive or DVD without being installed on the host computer.
