soldering case fan wires back on

Hey guys,

I did something dumb and dropped a case fan in such a way 3 of its 4 wires came off. Its one of those arctic pwm sharing F8 fans and its only been running for a month. I've never soldered on something in the computer before, so I was wondering if its worth a try to solder those wires back to their contact points? What if I spill too much solder on there, would that be a problem? Is there a way I could heat up the solder on the contact point and fix the wires without actually using more material?

Pretty basic questions, I know but I've not done this before and I dont want to just toss a new fan out. If theres no choice, then I guess I'd have to.

What have you got to lose?

Use a low wattage fine point iron , 15 watts (or less), clean 1/8" (or less) at the end of each broken wire and lightly "tin" the ends, after the ends cool, apply a very small amount of paste rosin to the tinned end of each wire. All you have to do now is hold each wire in place and "touch" the iron the the soldering point for 1/2 a second.

As you can probably tell, less is more!

Did the wires on the end of the connector separate or did the pins come out from the motherboard?

Zepher, the wires came off where they're connected on the fan, on this circular like board inside the fan. The plug still has 3 wires attached to it. The 4th wire is to read the pwm signal from the board with a 3 pin plug and thats still on the fan.
