Hello: For the past week I have been battling an "unspecified error" (766f6c756d652e63 3f1) in trying to run CHKDSK to help me clear various problems with my system's operation. I was getting many error windows informing me of what program or files were corrupted. These windows appeared at the lower right corner of the screen for about 10 seconds and either disappeared or another window would appear at various times. I ran my usual tests of CCleaner, Malwarebytes, Auslogic Defrag, Avast at full scan, sfc /scannow, and CHKDSK in regular mode and Safe Mode. CHKDSK would not work because of the "unspecified" error mentioned above. The error message is as follows: A disk check has been scheduled. Windows will now check the disk. Cannot open volume for direct access. Auto chk cannot run due to an error caused by a recently installed software package. Use the system restore feature from the Control Panel to restore the system to a point prior to the recent software package installation. An unspecified error occurred (766f6c756d652e63 3f1) After a few days of browsing the Internet for solutions and trying some of them, I was ready to give up and do a complete re-install of my Windows 7. Note: My backup system was not activated so I was unable to go back to an earlier installation of my system. My repair disk would not work nor using my original Windows 7 installation disk to do a system repair. After all this I finally decided to do one more thing. I went back and manually uninstalled all programs I had recently installed for the month of August up to the present day. Ran my CCleaner and Auslogic Defrag and then scheduled a CHKDSK test. To my surprise, CHKDSK ran complete and my system was back to normal. The words "recently software package installation" in the error message gave me my clue. I hope this might help anyone in my situation. Sorry for the long thread.

Any idea which program was the cause of the problem?

Thanks Ztruker for your response. To answer your question honestly, I have no clue which one or ones they were. I only uninstalled programs that were dated from August 1 to the day in September when I started uninstalling these programs. I remember a couple of them as programs to help get rid of Junk files, but their names escape me. One clue I did noticed is that the problem showed up when I had fragmented files that could not be defragmented with Auslogic and Windows defrag programs. Never had that problem before. I basically shotgun my way uninstalling these programs. I guess I could have handled this more systematically, but I was frustrated after a week of troubleshooting this problem.
