Some advice requested... xD

Well, it seems apparent to me now that I'm not getting my laptop running any time soon. All I have left to use is an old Dimension 4500 with an 18 gig hard drive. I'm afraid to put Win7 on it, due to how much space it would take up, but I really want to go back to it. So...

How much space does a Win7 installation take after a few days of being connected to the internet?
And with 18 gigs, would you even dare to recommend it? :p

Sad thing is, 3 days after my laptop crashing, reformatting the hard drive, etc.. It's already down to 5 gigs. But 3 gigs of that is for a project that I'll be deleting soon.

My first thought when I saw the 18GB hard drive was, "run a Linux OS on it", but then I remembered reading your post earlier today on the troubles you've had with that.

I just checked the properties for my Windows folder and it said 15GB for the 64-bit Ultimate. So I'm guessing that wouldn't work for you. I don't know how much smaller a 32-bit would be, either.....tough call!

18GB is cutting it close. But my Win7 runs in 16.5GB after 6 months and a lot of programs installed. But I have a seperate data partition, no hibernation file and no shadowstorage. I did, however, keep a 3GB page file. I would say you could try it if you make the right setup. And keep your data somewhere else.

PS: I forgot to mention that I uninstalled all the programs that came with the installation disk and that I do not use (e.g. Works). And if nothing helps, you could try to slipstream the installation disk with vLite - then you can make it fit for sure. (not 100% sure whether vLite works with Win7 - maybe someone knows).

How much disk space do you think Mint would take up? I'd be single booting with it... and I have an ethernet cable plugged into the system, so updates and the internet in general would not be a problem.

Any Linux distro would be a lot smaller than Win7. I remember my Ubuntu took less than 5GBs including the swap partition. And Fedora9 was about the same.

yup you need 20 gig , i think its 16 gig for windows then it needs some space to operate

gOS or Mint? I have both ISO's downloaded, and I have a USB boot creator. I just want to know which one would be better for a power user.. :p

Well, I tried gOS and Mint, and I went to Mint. gOS just seems too underdeveloped in my opinion (had some glitches, too)
