Some Times You Know too Much.

I have learned a lot about computers since I started building my own years ago, and I have also learned a lot about Win 7 from this forum. So when I had a small problem yesterday I was confident I would find the problem.
It started right after I booted and I heard this faint beep tone. It would beep about every 5mins. I looked on the taskbar for any programs that maybe be giving an alert but all was normal. I then looked at task manager but it also looked normal with no strange processes. Next I looked at the Event Viewer and all was good also. Checked device manager and all hardware was fine. I then tested all the windows sounds to see if one matched the beep I was getting and thereby identifying the source. No matches. I then turned off my speakers and when I still got the beeps, I concluded it was coming from the internal MB speaker. My next thought was malware. I ran full scans with NIS, Malwarebyts and SuperAntiSpyware and my system was clean.

I took a break and when walking down the hall I heard the dreaded beep again. Then it hit me!!

My cell phone battery was low.

So sometimes the more we know the harder it is to fix the easy stuff.

The times I've been looking around to see what's making the noise before I've seen my or my husbands phone is low.

Although I'm usually looking around the house trying to find the noise and not the computer

I was kinda like that when I had a HDD failure a while back. The HDD went out pretty hard, had the loud clicking noises and head scraping on the platter. When I got my new HDD, I was paranoid about any noise that even resembled what I heard when the previous HDD died.

lol, yeah. When I Got my F1's - every time they turned on and off I got a cold shiver up my spine because they sounded like my old HDD's click of death.


It took me a while to realise that it was normal for these drives

Funny you mention that.
I just went through the whole "spiel"
In the middle of the night (~1:30am)
The smoke detector next to the bedroom give off a 120db "chirp" every 50 seconds.
I grab a chair and remove the battery (because I was not about to search for a replacement at that time, half asleep and all). I lay back down and there it was again
Don't you know, my system has its own 110V connection and uses the battery only as Backup during power outage. So I took out the whole detector. The next morning the same started with the downstairs detector. And just as to make fun of me, the minute I fixed it, the CO detector started to act up. I must have been a sight foe sore eyes, staring on the device in my hand unable to understand how it still could beep :roflmao::roflmao::roflmao:
Geesh I must have grabbed some outdated batteries when I replaced them the last time.
But it was one hell of a test to see if they are able to wake you up in case of an emergency

Went to visit my grandmother once, when I got to her house she wasn't home. I let myself in to wait for her to get back. I had just started reading the newspaper when the smoke alarm chirped. So, being the diligent grandson that I am, I went to Wal Mart to get new batteries for the smoke alarms. Returned to the house, installed the batteries and waited for grandma.

When Grandma got home, I told her about the smoke alarms. She said "Is that what that was? I've been spraying for crickets!"

That happened to me once. I was halfway through the HD test when I noticed that the disturbing noise was one of my dogs gnawing on a bone...

Banging noise coming from my side mounted 230mm fan. Took side panel off and notice all four screws were loose. Tightened screws and replaced. Noise continued so I removed side panel and figured that the fan blades were striking the side panel so I took washers and shimmed the fan away from side panel and noise was lessened. Removed the side panel again and double shimmed the fan and no the fan was really loud? Removed and tried three shims each and the fan was stopped. Mean time I had RMA'd the fan and the side panel. No combination of fans or side panels made the noise go away. Then I stared into the case with panel off and saw that the stiff 12volt cables to the GPU were a possible culprit. Bent then over more and velcro'd same to case, reinstalled and problem solved. Returned all RMA items and laughed. System runs perfect but major operator error !
