Hi guys
i almost listed my question / problem under drumtrucker 's post , because something drives me nuts too , but upon reading the feedback he got , my problem is not the same

Drives me nuts that Folder windows do not (have option) to remember their size and position. Or am I just stupid?

And which forum would this be under?

Oh ! Before i forget, Thanks for all the help regarding my taskbar, i 'm starting to love Windows 7

Here's what drives me nuts
Every time i create a new folder or move a folder or rename a folder i get this problem. Windows changes my settings and gives me those giant icons . it drives me nuts.

in order to fix this ; i have to right click the folder's background, left clic on view
and select "Details" once this is done , i have to move the "Size" colum next to the "Name" colum ...... and i have to do that for every folder i create , move or rename.
i have main folders exceeding 1TB , and it takes a lot of time to go through every sub-folders and reset them all to my preference because i changed 1 letter in the folder's name.

But here's the worst, . . . Windows behaves beautifully with some folders and sub-folders ( no problem there) but Windows behaves like a brat towards other folders their sub-folders............ mostly folders containing videoes i think ... not sure yet ........ am i stupid ?? or am i missing something fondamental about default behaviours ??

Seeing how customizable Windows was toward my taskbar, i 'm sure Windows default with the giant icons could be changed so that every new folder and/or renamed folder and/or folder that just been moved would open showing in details with the size next to the name.

What i like about Windows 7
i love the snipping tool
i love the firewall in Windows 7 has because it does pester me every other minute with a request for aproval, it seems to be able to work on its own , it's friendlyer than my old one, and i'm told it's a very good firewall
Internet Explorer 8 has nice features as well , and it seen a lot faster too
and finding the right window for tuning my mic level was much easier than previous Win2k or XP
i just entered "mic setting" in search above Start and presto , i was there

Hi there Blue Dove, there is a fix for this, (sort of)

I'm assuming your issue is with the Libraries right? when you open the Pictures or Videos folder you get big old Icons and it resets even if you change it? I say this because in my experience, other folders remember the settings (although it sets them all the same, which is annoying)

To fix this:
Right click the Library in question, and click Properties
Near the bottom it will say "Optimise this folder for" Set it to either Documents or General Items.

Hi there Blue Dove, there is a fix for this, (sort of)

I'm assuming your issue is with the Libraries right? .

i have not yet used the library , i just don't know what a library's for.

i redid my taskbar with Quick Launch to the left as it was in Win2k and XP
Computer / Drive / folder / sub-folder is the path i use to get to what i want

i have no pinned icons either , maybe some day i will learn the values of a library , but for now , i know where mu stuff is , and the path to get there ,
PS: when someone has a lot of stuff , do they put 6 TB of files in a library ?
it seems easier for me to group forder and sub-folder by logical content , ( jpg , video , html ) are in the same sub folder if it related to each others

Hi, BlueDove.

Check out this tutorial. I believe it is what you are looking for: Folder View - Apply to All Folders - Windows 7 Forums

Simply, after you set the view to what you want for default, Click Tools > Folder Options > View > Apply to Folders > Ok.

(Do check the tutorial though if the option "Apply to Folders" is grayed out.)

Thanks Corrine
i'm now half way there but i see where my problem lies
i now have the sub-folders in a detail view --- no more giants icons
but i'm missing a tool bar
in the picture from step #2 in the tutorial they have an extra tool bar that has button "File" "Edit" "View" "Tools" "Help"
i do not have that tool bar, so i can not Click Tools > Folder Options

i will have to figure how to add the tool bar i need to access "Folder Options" from the folder which i am changing defaults

i guess i need that to get the "Size" colum next to the "Name" colum ??

Yea! I'm glad you got things set up the way you want. I'm like you and don't like the large icons, also preferring to display other information in the folder view

Good job, finding the File/Edit, etc. Menu bar, BlueDove! I should have mentioned that in my reply. (For anyone who comes along and doesn't know, to get the Menu Bar, Click Organize > Layout and check the option to display Menu bar).

I'll have this thread marked solved but do let us know if you need help again.
