Hey all, I've just installed Windows 7, and I'm having some trouble with something.

For some reason Windows 7 can only intermittently see my SD card slot, There is a unknown device in the device manager which I can't identify, and lastly, something is intermittently preventing Windows from logging off when I shut down.

Does anyone know what's up with these things? What information should I send you to help figure it out?

Thanks a lot!

Hey Zen

Could you go into dev mgr and right click the unknown device. there are a series of a bunch of numbers that can be used to id the device. IM sure Antman would know which.
Re: the shutdown. It might be related. If win 7 is waiting for a device to be safely removed and it never gets that signal it cant shut down.

You rang?

Actually, I look at the PCI bus number first. 0 means on the mobo, else means a card. If 0, what's missing?

Then, I grab the digit strings and Google.

I looked at the details found under Details --> Hardware Ids, it said ACPI/HPQ0004. I googled it a bit and found it to be related to the touchpad drivers (I'm on a HP laptop), and the HP Mobile Data protection system.

They haven't released any drivers for Windows 7 yet, so I'll just have to suffer with that for the time being.

Anyways, more information about the shutdown error. At times, a window will pop up at shutdown saying that the explorer.exe cannot be stopped and asking me to force a shutdown, which will result in the inability to complete the logoff.

Any ideas on the SD card slot problem?

Use the Vista driver that you can find. There may be a connection between this driver and your shutdown issue. Notice the ACPI portion.

TheSD card may or may not be related to the driver. Win 7 has the option to hide empty drives. To your knowledge, does this condition apply?

I went onto the HP Windows 7 Forum and poked around a bit and found the correct driver to fix the unknown driver issue. I'll test eventually to see if it affects shutdown.

I didn't know that Windows 7 hid empty drives, that may be the problem. The only issue I have with that is I dedicated the drive to ReadyBoost, and it's still not showing up, so if it hides ReadyBoost drives then I doubt it's an issue, otherwise.

I guess this is important to tell you all. I thought I'd fixed the problem, but I guess I didn't.

Anyways the problem is, upon resuming from hibernation (closing the laptop lid), Windows blue screens on me.

What's up with that?

To test whither or not it does hid empty drives, I threw some pictures onto the SD card.

Nope, the drive doesn't show up.

Though it does show up intermittently (usually if I shutdown without the card in, and then put it in after starting up).

Any thoughts on the blue screen?

I feel like posting an update on the blue screen, now instead of giving me a blue screen every time I close up my laptop and open it again, it will instead fail to go into hibernation mode. Instead the screen will go black as if it is going to hibernate, but the system will not shut down with it, and when I open up the computer again, it will not resume, so I am forced to hold the power button till it shuts off to get it to work again.

Edit: I figured I'd throw some more stats at you all. To help find the problem, I uninstalled a large portion of all my programs. The only things left are...

I guess lastly I should say that when I start and restart in safe mode, everything works fine.

I am having a similar issue. I recently updated one of my users from Vista to Windows 7 Pro and they were having shut down issues. I was also having issues with explorer.exe not running properly. Thanks to this post I have traced it to the SD card. I still don't have a solution, but at least now I know what the cause is. I can finally stop hitting my head on the desk.

Zen00,
I had some sleep/hibernation/BSOD issues on a Dell laptop with earlier versions of Windows 7 (I realize you are running W7 RTM). Turned out to be Synaptics-touchpad related (I think). It wasn't the drivers per se but the touchpad itself and its USB connection because the computer would act up even with no Synaptics drivers installed. But after finding a different driver (in the v12. range) it calmed down.

I believe your HP dv3-2155mx uses a Synaptics touchpad also. While Synaptics seems to be slowly developing W7 drivers, they haven't released anything beyond Vista v10.1.8 on their website.
However, there are others out there that may help (if, indeed, your problem is touchpad related). Here's a whole slew of newer ones:
Synaptics DriverVer v13.2.6.1 - NVISION

Thanks for the ideas. I decided that the explorer.exe file or something was corrupted, and as system restore wasn't fixing the issue, I reinstalled Windows. Everything is working smooth right now. I'm avoiding inserting the flash card just in case, and I downloaded the HP synaptic drivers which are apparently working. No issues right now. If I do notice something going wonky again, I'll hopefully be able to catch whatever program did it this time, now that I know what to expect.

By the way, where did those Synaptic drivers come from, if the latest official version is 10.1.8?

Yeah, especially when it only takes about two hours to install Windows and all my programs.

Do you know where those Synaptic drivers come from?

Synaptics supplies OEMs with touchpads and specific drivers per the OEMs' specs, which may or may not end up being tweaked further. The drivers on laptopvideo2go are from different OEMs. Since Synaptics doesn't sell directly to end-users, they wouldn't normally provide any drivers on their website. However, they do provide baseline, perhaps more stable (perhaps not), drivers that offer, in many cases, functions that the OEMs remove.

I think that explains why you can only find v10.x.x from Synaptics but v13.x.x out in the wild.
