I disconnect from the net when I write. Night before last I started to get start then stop tones. Happens about every 30 seconds now.
Task mgr shows no apps. Processes show Avast(turned avast off for a couple hours but still did it. Virus scan clean), desktop Windows mgr, AMD USB 3.0 device detector, realtek, windows task host, task mgr, csrss, winlogon, employer. All familiar I think. All the services seem recognizeable. Not sure where to turn next. Open to ideas. As I said this is new. Do not want to hook back to the web until I find out it's OK. Something wants access to the net badly. Updates are current.

When you disconnect from the net do you turn off the modem or just disconnect it from the computer. Does your modem have wi-fi. You have also mentioned start & stop tones, can you describe these or are you referring to the usual USB tones when connecting or disconnecting something.

Thanks for responding Ranger.

I connect through my phone. Fairly high speed with USB cable. At night I turn off my data, disconnect the cable and turn off the phone. Reverse in the morning. The tones are just basic windows tones. Rising note when something starts or connects and sliding note when something stops or disconnects. One common is when I plug in a flash drive. Same notes and same on disconnect.

If you run www.crewetown.co.uk/wireless.exe by right clicking and choose run as administrator that shows what's connected and waiting you may need to run it while connected then after you disconnect post results

My main concern is that something is collecting data and if I connect it'll be gone.

The only way to find the cause of this problem is by a process of elimination. So as a start do the following:

Try disconnecting your phone from the computer & that means disconnecting it at the computer, not at the phone. If you don't get any more USB connecting, disconnecting sounds, then the cause is the phone or the connecting cable.

If you still get the USB sounds then it's something else that is connected to the computer, so disconnect any other devices that are attached by USB & see if that fixes it.
