Something wrong with codecs

Hi
I cannot open video files in VirtualDub. I'm getting message:
Couldn't locate decompressor for format 'xvid' (unknown)...
Somebody told me to instal XivD for win x64 and I did but didn't help.
Could someone help me to solve this problem ?
My OS is win7 x64

The only codecs I have installed on this Windows 7x64 machine is from the following:

Windows 7 codecs |MG| Win7codecs 2.2.6 Final Download

x64 Components |MG| x64 Components 2.3.1 Final Download

It will help you make your settings for Xvid, etc. Have been using these since Vista with no problems whatsoever. He updates about every month, also.

Codec packs are useless and 7 should work with Xvid - install Media Player Home Cinema - choose either x86 or x64 and then the DirectX redist. Update your drivers too with the guide in my sig.

Here is one for you frost, I have the some mpeg files that I can hear but cannot see in wmp. I can see and hear them fine if I play them in Nero. Oddly I had the shark07 codec and all of them played fine, except my rmvb files that my dragon ball collection is in the format of. I was unable to watch the rmvb files in wmp or MC, then I installed real player plus so I could download flv from the web, plus I was able to see and hear my rmvb files in real player, still not in wmp or MC. Then I installed k lite codec pack, I was able to see and hear my rmvb files in wmp and in MC, of course I had to get rid of real player plus, because k lite had real player alternative. Now I cannot see my mpeg fiies in wmp or MC, but I can hear them. yeah a lot to digest huh, sorry. I want my mpeg to play in MC and wmp, I also want my rmvb to play in MC, how can i accomplish that? Seems like I install one thing to make one thing work, then I end up breaking something else.

1) Uninstall all codec packs

2) Reboot

3) Use system restore to go back to where there were no codec packs

4) Update your DirectX

5) Get Media Player Classic as above - either x86 or x64. It uses its own codecs and the quality is great if you have a card with hardware acceleration.

Do you know for a fact that media player classic has the codecs that allow playback of rmvb files?

Zay, Sharks codecs should be able to play anything in WMP.


if you're swapping to use FFDshow as your codec of choice for use in WMP:

check that the RMV video decoder isn't disabled in ffdshow. If so, you can set it to use libvacodec

Oh ok, I will give that a try. I did have fddshow, but when I installed the k lite mega pack, I had to remove it because k lite had fddshow as well.

Well I still have the k lite codec pack, and as you know it comes with ffdshow. I took your advice, and went into the ffdshow video configurator, and set the codec for my mpg files to use the libmpeg2. and I still only get audio when I play mpg files in wmp. Is mpg and mpeg the same thing? Or do you suggest I remove the klite and reinstall the ffdshow stand alone?

Yes. The built in codecs should work fine and its a small download.
