I have a Sony Vaio all-in-one destop with a dim screen, I can barely see what's there, if I put it to sleep and then come back the screen lights up for about 5 seconds and then goes dim again. Tried restarting but it does the same thing, just looking for some suggestions, it's out of warranty.

Are there in buttons or tabs on the monitor itself? Even if it's an all in one setup there should be. Look for the brighness tab/setting.

There are no buttons on the monitor, when I press the fn+f6 I can barely see the brightness, but it's all the way up.

The backlight system in the screen has failed. It will need to be replaced.

Look up the model number of your system on the Sony website for the age of it, When it was built. More then likely it has the older florescent tube style backlight and should be to costly to repair.

It's only about 4 years old, is that something you could do yourself?

You may be able to do it yourself. If your handy with a screwdriver. The problem will be finding the correct part.

It could also be what is called the inverter. Never tried doing one of these repair so I have no first hand knowledge on it.

If you're good with Google you might be able to find a replacement and how-to for your exact model.

This is how screen is replaced on a Vaio. You might want to check the connections first:

There may be some tabs or buttons on your screen for brightness or sharpness issues, you can just use them to enhance your screen's brightness.
