How I installed the latest Nvidia M 186.81 notebook driver to my Sony Vaio VGN-AR51E laptop.
Sony is supposed to supply the drivers but they don't for some reason.
The latest laptop drivers from Nvidia work if you alter two lines of information in the appropriate inf file before executing.
I downloaded the latest driver from Nvidia (186.81) and ran it so it unpacked into a folder in my C drive. [Message box says it won't install].
From Control panel I got my driver hardware ID
Control panel / Device manager / Display adapters / Properties / Details / Device description/
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D&REV_A1
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&CC_030000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&CC_0300
(You just need the second line here)
Then I opened up the Nvidia driver package and altered NVDM.inf file, in the Display folder, by adding two lines to include my hardware ID
(as you scroll down the inf file and study, you will see where these go, in two different list sections)
%NVIDIA_DEV.0426.01% = Section005, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0426&SUBSYS_9016104D
NVIDIA_DEV.0426.01 = "NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GT (Sony Vaio AR51E)"
I included my ID also in ListDevices.txt in the NVDM.inf section
and in modes.txt (but may be superfluous - I am no expert!)
Also I put the two lines in the NVAM.inf (but may be superfluous)
Don't forget to save all.
I deleted the old Nvidia driver rebooted and ran setup on the new Nvidia driver! It worked!! Hope this helps you. PYL

I don't own and portable computers, so I have an excuse not to have know about that. (I only learned of it very recently.)

I'm very surprised that it seems most laptop owners don't know about it too.

Hey Christian

Hey Christian, I have a vaio as well and am trying to install the same drivers. However I don't know too much about computers. If you could elaborate on how you did it it would really be a big help to me. Thanks~!

Hm it's not working... The driver took a while to install. After I rebooted the driver the version number still showed the old one. I also tried uninstalling the drivers on the video card and uninstalling the video card itself then reinstalling but that did not work either. Does anybody have any idea why?

All I can think of is you missed something in the mod. Try reading the first post again, and the Driver Heaven site or print it out. Then follow exactly.Fabe

Hi xDestry

How can I help? Did you try my method, as per first post above? What could I clarify? I have not tried the Driver Heaven method, myself.

I don't know. Never used it before. If you fill in your system specs, we could tell you if compatible.

Actually, if it's running Vista fine - 7 will be fine. Simple.

PYL

Thank you so much for this information. It is much appreciated.

This also works for 8400M GS. I had an error on my old driver and was forced to use my notebook at VGA mode to avoid freezes. Now I have an updated version dated 19.07.2010 for Vista :)

Problem

@ rkeilty: Amazing work. Slight problem though.

I've figured everything else out. However i am unable to understand how you have decoded the part ".01% = Section005". I am using a different card i.e. DT330 M on a different vaio model i.e. VPCCW26 hence the difference. How do i determine what i have to insert in my specific case.

Help would be much appreciated because i'm trying to start playing FIFA 13.

Thanks !

Hi, I have a Sony VIAO VPCCW21FD - the Display Driver is old - NVIDIA. I'm having problems finding a good update that will install properly, any suggestions? I tried to follow the above instructions but am having problems. How does one determine the best location to insert the information? Display adapters:
NVIDIA GeFORCE 310M
Hardware IDs
