I may become your most hated member in the next few days, but please bear with me, as the problems just never end. I knew the answer to this one the first time it happened but i cannot recall now. I open a txt file and edit it, then when i try to save it i can't. It offers to save it to the same location but as a different file. And if i try to just save it with the same name it won't overwrite the original. I just want to "save" and have it save the edit and close.

You are trying to edit a file that requires Administrative privileges correct? Either copy the file to your desktop, edit then move it back. Or open Notepad with "Run as..." then open the file though the open dialog.

Wait, are you saying i will have tyo do this with every file i ever try to edit?! Because thats ridiculous. If thats the case i'd definitely go back to XP. But it didn't happen before so theres gotta be some other reason.

Oh, and no, it's not read only. In fact, this file is on a storage drive and was editable last install. Speaking of last installs, this may be the last 7 install because i think i'm on the verge of going back to XP. 7 is just ridiculous. I mean, i understand the reality of this....i just have to know how to do things. But good god, i'm spending entire days just trying to make this crazy OS usable !

No. Only files with in system locations, like in Program Files and Windows.

So you are working on a data partition that was part of another Windows installation? You must update the permissions of that partition then. The old permissions are being used on the drive.

No, it's a storage drive. And this file did not do this when i edited it before i reinstalled 7 this morning. Why now?

Because the permissions are still set for that previous installation of Windows. You have to reset the permissions of that drive for the new installation.

But like i said, it WORKED in the previous install ! In fact, i never had this problem with that same file or any other file in XP, or in the last 2 times i had 7 on this new pc. And every time that drive was just a storage drive, E:. (yes, this is my 3rd install of 7) So that doesn't make any sense.

Why are you not listening to what I am telling you? Further more, this would have happened on Windows XP as well. It happens on all version of Windows that use NTFS.

Thats great...i'm told this would happen on any install so why am i not listening, yet no one is listening to what i said which is it di NOT happen on the3 last 2 installs of seven nor on any XP install ever, and with the same file on the same storage drive thats never had a OS on it.

So i'm somehow the ahole for asking and not hearing a solution other than "permissions" even tho i did not need to do that last time, time b4 that, etc. What don't you get about that?:(

... I have a 500GB USB hard drive that was once formatted to FAT32 under XP and then upgraded to NTFS all under Window's XP. The drive has since been through several more XP installs and one failed Window's 7 install, I've never had a saving problem with it. However, a quick check in the properties of one of the file (security tab) to see if all the standard user(s) are in place (System, everyone / authenticated users, administrators, etc) should let you know if the permission settings are healthy or not.

Anyway, which program are you using to edit and save your text documents with? My computer is set to open all text files types in Office 2007. And I did have a saving problem once a blue moon ago (XP), but not on my USB hard drive-- on the OS drive itself and it was like the one you mentioned. I got it fixed though (shame that I can't find the exact technet article link for it anymore :/)

Anyway, what I did was remove the system attribute (-s) from the problem files & folder with a simple command line: attrib M:\*.* -s -r /S /D and then rebooted as the guide suggested to.

M:\ is just an example location, when I had the problem my location was set to the desktop folder. I don't know if it will solve your problem, but it's worth a mention I suppose.

... it did NOT happen on the3 last 2 installs of seven nor on any XP install ever, and with the same file on the same storage drive that's never had a OS on it.

So I'm somehow the ahole for asking and not hearing a solution other than "permissions" even tho I did not need to do that last time, time before that, etc. What don't you get about that?:(
