Sorry this is Vague: Need help with Laptop Please

Hi All. I forgot this was the holiday weekend and we’re having out of state company over for another day or two so I’ll have to wait to ‘play’ with this some more, but here’s a quick update on the above posts:

Yes, I discovered Defrag is on and set to run automatically.

I’ll definitively recommend more RAM and a SSD to my out of town relative the next time I see/talk to him. I’m not even sure why he wants the laptop as he has a smart phone. I’m under the assumption it’s just something for him to play with and see if he wants a ‘real’ computer or not…?

Hmmm, a backup. Didn’t think of that but it sounds like a good idea.

I turned off auto check for Updates and that seems to have fixed the svchost problem.

Yes, I’ll keep you All posted on progress when I’m able to get back to this.

Hi All. Finally, with all of your help, this is wrapped up. After some more searching the svchost problem turned out to be an easy fix. One suggestion I read was to delete the folder SoftwareDistribution. I did and the problem went away.

Even though I don't know anything about WiFi, I gave it a try. After about 1 1/2 of messing with it, I gave up and ran a CAT5e cable to it. The first thing I did was install Avast, and then all the Windows Updates it could find. I already had CCleaner and MalwareBytes on it. Rescanning came up clean.

I installed FireFox and VLC and called it good.

So now it's running at "full speed" but it is still a one core 2GHz AMD Sempron CPU, so it doesn't blaze any trails, LOL.

I'd still like to get the WiFi working just to see if I can get reception out in the shed, though...

I do thank everyone for their time and effort in this matter, I do appreciate it!!

Thanks.

Here are a couple of things I posted about getting a connection in the shed:

Replacement for Old Linksys wrt54g

Replacement for Old Linksys wrt54g

Basically, you could use a powerline adapter, which will utilize your house's electrical wiring to get a connection to the shed; or you could use a good antenna on your router, on your computer, or both, to improve your wifi signal.
