I have a very strange problem: When I play sound files that reside on my laptop, they play through the external speakers that are connected to my docking station. But when I play a Youtube video or there is a web page that plays sound, it will only come through the tiny onboard speakers on the laptop. I've gone through every setting I can find on the computer, without finding anything amiss.

What gives??

Are you using the Dell supplied IDT driver for the sound? If not, that is the first step. I do a lot of support on the Dell user forum and we have found that non-Dell drivers either do not work or do not work correctly.

I see two listings in the E6400 IDT drivers. What looks like a driver and the other looks like a driver update. If you are using the Dell sound driver, install the update and see if that helps. Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

If you want to get support from one of the Laptop user experts on the Dell forum, you can register and then post on the Laptop Audio Hardware section. "Jim" is our Laptop audio expert. http://en.community.dell.com/
