After installing a new sound driver from Dell yesterday, I can't play any sort of sounds in media players. System sounds are still working fine, as well as youtube etc. However, windows media player, VLC, quicktime and spotify cannot play sound files.

WMP:

Web help button sends me here: Windows Media Player error C00D11B1 (None of it fixed the issue.)

Spotify says something about a missing audio driver.

Anyway, so I tried rebooting, rolling back the driver, installing an HD audio driver from realtek themselves. None of these things work.

When a system sound plays, the bar next to "speakers" goes up, but when playing music nothing shows.

I've also tried fiddling with the device settings in media player, to no avail.

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated! :)

Have you tried a System Restore, back to BEFORE doing the sound driver Update? If not, give that a shot.

There is also a special Alienware owners support section (Club) on the Dell community (users helping users as this forum).

I didn't really want to resort to one, but I did a system restore anyway. Fixed the issue as I expected. Thanks :)

Still a bit irritating that installing new drivers would screw stuff up like this, but no harm's been done so I don't really mind.

Thanks again.

Did you both "Configure" and adjust Properties on the audio device post update? For me they usually reset to defaults with each install. This also could be affecting CODECS available to windows, depending on what Dell distributed in the update. If you're still game to keep trying, load up the new drivers again and then run the MS Fix It for audio playback and see what it comes back with.

Say it isn't so!:sarc:

I haven't found the MS "fixit" to really fix anything. Everytime I've tried it the problem was not fixed.
