Sound Muffled

I've noticed that the sound on my HP dv7 laptop seems more muffled that it used to. I was trying to watch a video with the volume on low last night and I couldn't really make out what was being said. Usually this is fine.

Any ideas? - I checked the speaker drivers in control panel and apparently they are up to date and working okay.

I'm running win 7 RC by the way. Before that it was vista.

did this whappened when you started using W7? Drivers for audio on laptops almost always contain software that will enhance the quality of the sound produced by the speaker(s), a thing that can't be done with generic drivers.

Does this mean that I need to download some higher spec drivers? I've been using the one's from the HP website: IDT High-Definition Audio CODEC Driver  . They're called "IDT High-Definition Audio CODEC drivers".

Yeah it's only happened since I started using 7.

I had this problem myself the way I fixed this was using the Action Center looking in the maintenance and check for solutions there it then found a problem with the sound drivers and sent me to the correct place to download the correct driver. I hope this helps out.

Mines louder then usual, but it's also odd, it doesn't mute when I put it on mute...
The only way to mute it is to mute whats initially making the sound... :S

Also, on the action center it only says something about the format in AVG... which I've tried everything and it doesn't fix it, lol.

Had a look in the action centre but it did detect a problem. Neither did the device driver manager.

It seems to fix itself when I install the older versions of the HP driver from their site (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&product=3257766〈=en for your model xJason have you tried that?) but it will occasionally revert back to being muffled and I'll have to reinstall them.

I'm sure even then the sound quality isn't great :sarc:

Yeah I tried that and it doesn't do anything different, also the quick launch buttons thing doesn't work with Win7 I think.

I just solved this problem on my HP dv4-1225dx laptop. After searching and searching, I just couldn't find a driver that fixed my problem. Then - and I thought I had already tried this, but I guess I missed it - I did this:
Clicked on the audio control
Clicked on the icon at the top
Clicked the advanced tab
adjusted the format settings to a higher bitrate - apparently it had reset to low quality when I installed some updates.

This happened about 2 months after upgrading to Win 7, so I don't think that had a whole lot to do with the problem.
