Friend just bought a new Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.

It seems like the sound is muted every time the computer starts.

Almost no new programs on there yet except I've installed LogMeIn free.

Any ideas?

Try going to your PC's manufacturers website and see if any updated drivers are available.

Does he have Ubuntu installed on the laptop? After some research the only thing I see causing this issue is if Ubuntu has been introduced to the machine.
