sound off sometimes

Often the computer starts without sound or it looses sound. It gets resolved by restarting, sometimes it requires two restarts.
I updated the Dell sound drivers but it did not help. Any suggestions?

Do you have the VIA integrated (on the motherboard) audio or the optional SoundBlaster?

If you have the SoundBlaster, make sure the Integrated audio is disabled in the BIOS (F2 Setup). If they are both enabled there can be conflicts and the problem you are having can happen.

When you start the PC, was it completely powered down, or was it Hibernated?

Also, what programs do you have in the startup, that uses audio, e.g. Skype or any media players?

Also, is THIS the driver you have installed? This is the latest version listed on the Dell downloads for your model and Win 7.

It is completely powered down.
I have Skype automatically and I play Backgammonmasters.

Disable Skype, so it doesn't start when you startup Windows and see if that makes a difference. If the Backgammonmasters starts at startup, disable it too.

There has to be something in the startup that is causing it. Look over what is in the startup (msconfig) and try temporarily disabling non essential items to see if it makes a difference.

Click on the Start orb and then enter msconfig in the search box.

Although you could ditch the fax, print, dleamon.exe without any adverse affects.


The only thing in that list that would affect the sound is the via sound control panel.




I presume you've been through all the settings in the sound cpl? Perhaps disabled it from starting to see if it has any impact?

I have disconnected everything you suggested, including the via control panel. Still. it did not help. Seems that I will have to live with it.

Are you using speakers or headphones with this system, and have you checked that all connections are tight, and tried them on something else as well, to eliminate that it's not them, that is having an issue?

I am using speakers and when I lost sound I tried headphones but it did not work either.
