SOUND RECORDER Problem with Windows 7 Pro

I just got this Dell Optiplex 760 tower with Windows 7 Pro OS. On my previous computer, I had XP, and I configured the Free Sound Recorder from CNET.com. It worked wonderfully - anything coming through the system it could record. Now, I'm seeing on this that there are only TWO (2) recording inputs - the microphone and line in, so free sound recorder doesn't work on this (as it can't detect, apparently, the sound card).

My Question: Does this computer even have a SOUND CARD and, if so, is it possible for me to configure it so that I can get Free Sound Recorder? This really is an excellent recording program and so easy to use. (If anyone knows one better than this, would you please let me know?). Thanks for ANY help whatsoever you can offer me.

You need the "System Mixer" to be able to record streaming audio from the internet. It may or may not have this as some new PC's (all makes, not just Dell) do not have this option.

To see if you have the System Mixer (may be called Stereo Mixer on some), go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. In the Sound Panel click on the Recording Tab. If the System Mixer is listed, enable it if it's not enabled and then set this as the Default Playback device. If the System Mixer is not listed, RIGHT click in a blank area on this panel and then check to show both disabled and disconnected devices. If the System Mixer shows up you can enable/select it as the Default playback device. If it is not available, you can try the Dell downloads to see if there is an updated sound driver. You must use the Dell sound driver as non-Dell, in most cases, either does not work or does not work correctly. The Dell downloads are at www.support.dell.com you can access the downloads via your service tag number (preferred) or just by the model type and number.

For a recording program, I prefer the very popular "Audacity" recording program. Download the "beta" version for Win 7 systems. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
