I have been working on my friend's Dell laptop running Windows 7 Home Prem. It keeps informing me that I have one critical update (Service Pack 1) when I install it, it says the update was successful, but the next time I reboot, it gives me the same critical update message. If I look in update history it shows that it has been successfully installed 4 times. If I go to system in control panel it shows that I'm running Win 7 Home Prem, but no mention of SP 1. as it does on my desktop. I hid the update to stop it from nagging all the time. I tried to update to IE 11 but it downloads, but will not install because it says I have the wrong version of Win 7. I ran sfc /scannow. It said it couldn't repair all files, but somethings do run better, just can't run the update. I have run 4 anti-virus scan with different software including RogueKiller; Nada. What's next? I've run out of smart.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Here are the issues: I had already downloaded and run the SURT. The Hotfix that it sought to install was already installed, so it would not continue and I got the following; installation encountered the error 0x80240009. I ran sfc \scannow and have attached the CBS zip. Spoke too soon. This happened:
500 - Internal server error.

Second Reply.

I rebooted the computer and ran SURT again. This time it installed; I received no error messages. I ran SFC again and am attempting to attach zip file.

Will attempt to zip individual files and upload.

SFC shows no problems - but we really need the CheckSUR.log file :)
There are a number of errors n the background CBS log data - CheckSUR may give us a handle on them.

Hmm - nothing amiss there :(

Please upload the C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file - then try this....

Open an Elevated COmmand Prompt, and run the following command
Code:
[B]dism /online /remove-package /packagename:Package_for_KB976932~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.17514[/B]

.

Once complete, reboot, and then post the new windowsupdate.log file - and run SFC and CheckSUR again, and post the CBS and CheckSUR log files.

Then download the SP1 installer from Download Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1 (KB976932) from Official Microsoft Download Centre and run that (make sure that you get the right one!)

then post the new CBS.log file, and the new windowsupdate.log file.

Why is WinHelp32 even attempting to open??

Reboot and try SFC again - sound like the uninstall hasn't completed yet.

I have attached the 2 requested files. You reminded me to be sure to download the correct file, as there are several listed on that page, is there an identifier I should be looking for?

I am happy to report that this issue has been solved. My friend's laptop is completely updated to SP 1 and IE 11. It is gratifying to know that there are folks around that are willing to lend a hand and expertise. No doubt, the lady to whom this laptop belongs, will reward me with some of the best...wine I've had in some time. Unfortunately, I'm one of those people that reads the TOS. Sorry NoelDP, tipping is not allowed. ;)

..worse luck :( - otherwise I'd be able to go to the pub every night :)

Glad to hear the problem is solved - keep an eye on Windows Update for a while and let me know if it causes any problems, but I don't think it will.

Good luck!
