Every time I boot my PC, I get a security warning in the notification area that says my virus protection (MSE) has been turned off. When I check MSE to confirm, it's not turned off but the warning remains. If I click "let windows fix" everything goes back to normal. This only happens after SP1. Any way to fix this?

Hi, mborner.

To start, make sure the “Microsoft Security Essentials” service is set to automatic and is started
  1. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, click Start, click in the Start Search box, type services.msc, and then press Enter.
  2. Search for Microsoft Antimalware Service. Right click it and select Properties or double-click it to open the service.
  3. Check to make sure that the "Startup Type" is set to "Automatic".
  4. Click the Start button to start the service. If the Start button is not available, click the Stop button, and then click the Start button to restart the service.

If that doesn't solve the problem, I suggest you uninstall and then reinstall MSE.

Thanks, Corrine, I'll give that a try.

we need not immediately switch to SP1 since its just a bulk of previous security patches. better leave it until June or August after all issues have been considered and resoved
