SP1 & customizations

I've removed the Welcome Screen branding, changed the Orb & its Balloon Tip as well as the StartUp sound. By installing SP1, will these be reset to Window's default which will mean for me to reapply my changes?

I lost allot of my customizations after installing SP1 start orb,log on screen etc so yes it will.There have also been some reports on the forum of SP1 not installing if lots of customizing has been done especially if you have altered any system files.It may be worth while running SFC/SCANNOW before trying to install the service pack which will reset some of the changes you have made and then start a fresh but that's your choice

Ya Danny it reset all my system files back to default without SFC/SCANNOW

Yer Jerry the first sp1 install I did reset all of mine too but the second time I tried on another machine I couldn't get it to install and could only put it down to my modding of files as it installed after undoing my customizations by running the system file checker

Also ... at least on my PC, after the SP1 installation, it would no longer allow me to change the Windows ... Resource system files. I even unhid the real Admin account and tried it from there. No luck.

I know I was able to do that before SP1 because I kept a backup copy of each changed system file in the folder -- and the backup versions were still there. But the new versions were different file sizes.

Had to resort to booting into a Linux OS and making the changes from there.

They're not so much "reset", but updated or replaced by newer (SP1) versions of the files. As such, these new files don't have your customisations in.

I lost most of mine, too.

I understand it is thier software & they can do what they want w/it, but I just wish Microsoft would let us, the customers who buy their OS/a comfuser w/Windows on it, customize it the way WE want. We, as buyers, essentially pay their saleries.

Mark Phelps, do you have a list of just which Resource System Files can no longer be changed after SP1?
I've deleted a bunch of default Fonts & Screen Savers
Changed the Startup Sound
Changed my logon screen to a Windows 3.1 background
Removed the OS branding from the logon screen
Changed my Orb & it's baloon tip
Still plan on changing the Welcome text on the logon screen
And maybe the Boot animation

I'd really hate to find out that I can no longer reimpliment these little tweaks.

I changed my desktop's start button and then upgraded to SP1. Now Every time I start my desktop, it pops up 9 or 10 errors saying bitmap not found on a black screen, then loads the startbutton I had changed it to.

What is the difference b'tween this hidden Admin Account & one we personally create when 1st installing 7? I didn't even know about the hidden Admin Account.

Just reload your start button again using whatever program you used to change it in the first place.Looks like its lost the location of the bitmap images thats all.

Sorry for the delayed response ...

It was basically the aero.msstyles files in Windows\Resources\Themes\Aero

I had made a backup of the original and replaced it with a file from a theme.

When I did the SP1 update, it overwrote that file (to be expected) with a newer "default" version. However, try as I could (even unhiding the real Administrator account), I was unable to take ownership of the new default file.

So, I had to resort to booting from a Linux liveCD and making the changes that way.

I know I had done it in Win7 before because the old copy of the default file was still in the directory with the original date/time stamp.

Just found out that MS has yet again screwed customers who like to customize our comfusers!

I finally did a complete wipe of my HD then reinstalled 7 Pro 64Bit & all updates including SP1. As I was customizing it (deleting fonts, cursors, media sounds, themes, etc.) I have found out that I can no longer edit/replace a few files:

I have followed all tutorials multiple times & I either get an error/it simple will not work. I do believe this is due to SP1. I did find a way around the Logon Sound error though, I just put the sound I want to use into my c:\Windows\Media folder & named it: Windows Startup.

I can (& did) get rid of the BRANDING on the logon screen & changed the Orb & Logon Wallpaper w/o problems. But I wish MS would let us customers do w/what we want to the OS that WE paid for!

CJW, Microsoft does not have to support you when you change system files. It was spelled out clear as day when you made these changes that updates will change the files you altered, without question, without permission, without your knowledge. That is the risk you took of your own free will. Nor is Microsoft stopping you from doing what you want (other then distribute of course) with the OS you paid for. Be aware you do not own it you own a license to it.

And please stop with the "M$" BS, it does nothing but make you sound like a hypocrite child. Microsoft is a business not a charity. The act of having a business is to make money. Nothing more nothing less. If you cannot understand that fact then I'm sorry.

I was finally able to change the Welcome text & Shutting down... text as well as the Orb's Balloon ToolTip. Sound is no longer working as wanted, reverted to default. Perhaps SP1 just needed a few days to 'settle in'.

Next is to try changing the Boot Animation. But since I don't know how to create the animation I want, I may just use a .jpg file.
