SP1 not installing

I have made several attempts to install Service Pack 1.
Initially through Windows Upate process and now more recently i have downloaded the big 1.9gb .iso file. This has been burnt to DVD and i have attempted twice to install from the DVD. On each of these last 2 ocassions it has reached the 'configuration' stage but has failed at 15% then 'reverted the changes'.
I have run the System Update Readiness Tool ( this said it installed ok ), i have turned off Avast AV and i have disconnected from the internet during installation.
I notice in Windows Update there are a lot of old updates which have 'failed' - updates which were released before SP1 was. Should i attempt in install these first then try SP1 again?

*To give you an answer to your question we need the failed update KB******* numbers please.

* Did you check in Event Viewer re the failed updates / SP1?
Type eventvwr in search.
Go to the windows log>application tab.
Look for critical errors (they have red in the left column)that say anything that relates to the problem.
Please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

when it is a failed update the best thing to do is to insert the Win7 disc and do a upgrade and that will fix the service pack issue

In my country these are NOT supplied at point of {new computer /OS} sale.

Oh that it was so easy.
Doesn't work that way here.
If one requires the OS disc one buys it at full retail price.{ usually our computer gear is double USA prices.} We truly are at a disadvantage in this area.

well i don't know what to tell you my friend read the numbers and go through the fixes

one reason could be video card or other periphials installed

I bought two Win7 home premium disc it cost me some money but hey i don't have to worry about the pain in the butt of getting a service pack installed

If i were you ,I would invest in buying the disc it will save you alot of HEADACHES trust me

Please also get a legit copy of your own no ISO -remakes and fake codes we are real and legit here

Re Event Viewer Errors. There are so many listed that run from November till now. Would have been better to have researched these errors long ago.
I would suggest that in future you regularly check for errors & click on the appropriate links below each { General >More Information} to read what the error means & how to deal with it.

You could try to roll back via System Restore to a date prior to your current problems occurring or restore an appropriate System Back up that you should have made.

I have not received any previous error messages re the Event Viewer Errors. Should i have been going looking for them?

I did create recovery disc(s) when first setting up the laptop. Is this what you mean by a System Backup?

I have not had the laptop long, there is no paid for software on it and any important stuff is backed up on Dropbox - is a factory reset an option?

The recovery discs you created when you first set it up are used to recover your computer to its factory state when you first bought it.

Any personal data you haven't backed up would be lost and any applications you had installed would have to be re-installed.

If you still have a recovery partition on your hard drive you can also use that to recover your computer to its factory state and it would be a lot quicker than using the recovery discs.

The system backup that JMH spoke about is different to a factory restore. A system image backup creates an image of the whole drive and/or partition and can be used to restore your computer's operating system and installed applications from it in the event of a virus infection or system file corruption.

Your personal data files can be backed up separately, but whatever you're backing up you need to use an external hard drive so as to prevent data loss should your internal hard drive fail.

As for Event Viewer logging, there's no harm in checking on a regular basis for any recurring events that may be a sign of a problem with your computer.

If you see an event you think needs investigating, just highlight the occurrence then click the Details tab for more information on it.

Sorry i haven't posted about this for a while.

Microsoft Support are currently helping me resolve the problem.

At their request i have tried the SP1 install in clean boot mode - without success.
I have provided them with a CheckSUR.log file and run the System File Checker - again no success installing SP1.
I have now done an In Place Upgrade and am awaiting further instructions form them. I have 90 updates waiting in Windows Updates and SP1 is not one of them so i am reluctant to install the 90 as some are more recent than SP1 - surely updates need installing in the order they are released?

Well i am now one seriously cheesed off Windows user.
Having gone through the In Place Upgrade ( a 3gb download ), downloaded and installed 90 Updates ( 0.2gb ), downloaded the Standalone SP1 file again ( another 0.88gb ) i am back where i started - SP1 fails to install. Installation fails at the same point it did weeks ago.
I am at a loss as to what to do next. Do i just carry on using Windows and forget about SP1 - will it at some point in the future fail to install new updates because i dont have SP1 installed.
I have spent so much time on this for many weeks. I got the laptop as an aid for my main hobby of Letterboxing on Dartmoor but i seem to be spending every minute i use it trying to update the damn thing.
Surely there must be a better OS than Windows? Probably not the best forum to be asking that question!!
If only i had the confidence and knowledge to try something else.
Any of you chaps live in South Devon and want to help me fix this thing?

They assure me it is ok to carry on without SP1 for sometime.
