Hi Everyone,

I run Win7 Ultimate 64bit SP1 at present.

A provider informs me the cause of their programme installation failure is because I don't have SP3 installed.

I have loads of programmes, both old and new, running on my desktop, but have never before been required to have SP3 installed. (I never even knew there was such a Service Pack until a couple of hours ago)

Can anyone (a) enlighten me as to what SP3 does, and (b) let me know how I can obtain it to install.

Thank you.

Ian

As Zero said officially there is only SP1, however there was a point where after a certain update was applied people started to refer to this as SP2. following this logic it COULD be said that after the first ESU, Extended support update, update is installed it might be classified as SP3 by certain companies.
I see in your other thread regarding restore options you have updates turned OFF

you did not say what the program was, or provide any failure data, which might help.

Hi Zero & torchwood,

My apologies for the time taken to respond but, in the vain hope of help coming from the Provider (Protonmail.com) I didn't want to "jump any gun", so to speak.

They (Protonmail.com) have totally ignored my last four emails on this subject - quite possibly as I have asked for a refund!!!! (Who knows) A very unprofessional mob anyway.

My updates were turned off as far too many of Microsoft's "good ideas" usually resulted in a BSOD, necessitating a re-install.

A screenshot of the error message is attached. There was only one file to download. Install was tried several times on two machines, as was re-downloading with and without DownloadManager.

Thanks again to you both.

Ian

Hi Roy,
My copy of Win7 Ultimate SP1 was only recently (9 weeks) provided by Microsoft Reading in co-operation with Seattle (Long story, not for publication) so would have thought it was fully updated - but who knows?

IF a programme has a specific requirement, such as drivers or updates, the Supplier should draw attention to it, not just "grab the money and run".

Anyway, even if I discovered the presence of an SP3., 4.,5 & 6 already installed, the unprofessionalism of Protonmail is such that I will not install their product. For every (most) piece of software, there is invariably an alternative to be had - somewhere.

Thanks for your suggestion.

Ian

That copy of W7, likely only includes SP1, thier latest version, MS have never produced any media that is totally upto date. You will likely have 170 updates to install, and the KB i mentioned is 1 of them.

go Cntrol Panel >>> Windows updates >> Installed updates(bottom left)

Hi Roy,

Well, whether my version is up to date or not, it functions perfectly well with all the programmes I use, and my Internet usage too.

As I said last time, Protonmail will not become part of my "system". In this day and age, if a Seller can't advertise their product correctly, nor respond to polite email requests for assistance, they are of no interest to me.

Thanks for taking the time to investigate but, I shall not be taking this any further.

Kind regards,

Ian

Yes, Proton Technologies doesn't really have the best of customer support. But guess what? A whole hell of a lot of people use ProtonMail including me. Yes, I use the Bridge and Apps for my phone and tablet. From Wikipedia:

ProtonMail opened up to the public in March 2016. In 2017, ProtonMail had over 2 million users,[11] and grew to over 5 million by September 2018,[12] 20 million by the end of 2019,[13] and over 50 million in 2020.[14]

What does this mean? Two points:

1) With that many people it would probably be very hard to answer all questions via customer service. (They do need a forum).

2) I don't think too many other users have this issue including me. I only use a handful of updates because that's how I roll, especially the aforementioned being hosed over by an "update" that lacks low QC (Quality Control). I do run a tight ship however and I'm not writing a book on it all which I can and will if I have to. Trust me.

Now you asked a question and got an answer. And here's some evidence that backs up what Torchwood said.

https://www.dell.com/support/kbdoc/...n-a-system-running-windows-7-32-bit-or-64-bit

KB3033929 is the update I have installed and so far no Proton Bridge mess ups.

Now do your due diligence and fix the issue at hand and stop blaming the cow for not running like a horse.

Now if you think email is secure, nothing could be farther from the truth...

ProtonMail just gives you a car with tinted windows. You're still visible in public... You need to know that metadata and everything else can be attached here. And using ProtonMail its self makes you target number 1.

You want secure messages? Use Signal, Threema or maybe Wire. (Use it with a one time pad). Each has its negatives and positives. Above all else, you are your own worst enemy, so are your friends, and how you run your device's security.

Well, F22 Simpilot, having read your somewhat disjointed and barely relevant to my question tirade, I must assume your formula milk was off at breakfast time.

We do at least agree on one point though -- Protonmail does not provide the best of customer support.

Professionally run businesses usually try to maintain a standard of service throughout all periods of fluctuating demand, as that way they retain a bank of satisfied customers on which to rely in the future.

If, as you purport, Protonmail have allowed their business to take on such vast numbers of customers, but failed to maintain a good standard of customer service, then one might question their professionalism or business acumen.

To say, with such apparent glib acceptance - "With that many people it would probably be hard to answer all questions", simply illustrates a lack of good business organisational experience.

It is irrelevant as to whether one or thousands of other users have, or have not, this problem. Suffice a problem exists and needs addressing.

I must confess amusement at some of the expressions used in your tirade, e.g. "How I roll", "hosed over by an update" and "blaming the cow for not running like a horse", none of which have relevance to the original question in any meaningful way.

The original question asked was -- "Can anyone (a) enlighten me as to what SP3 does, and (b) let me know how I can obtain it to install.", a question which both Zero and torchwood addressed sensibly, courteously, and with both providing valid and factual information.

Please do not respond further to my post, as courtesy demands I must reply. However, I would prefer spending my time more productively on other matters.

Tirade:

noun
a prolonged outburst of bitter, outspoken denunciation: a tirade against smoking.
a long, vehement speech: a tirade in the Senate.
a passage dealing with a single theme or idea, as in poetry: the stately tirades of Corneille.

See post #6

IF a programme has a specific requirement, such as drivers or updates, the Supplier should draw attention to it, not just "grab the money and run".

It's not Proton Technologies' problem. They signed the cab file with SHA2 which means your OS (Windows 7) needs an update to handle that. If you bothered to read the article I gave a link to from Dell, you'd understand a little about what it's all about. Also, you can use your computer and freewill to educate yourself a little about why there's such a thing as code signing.

Professionally run businesses usually try to maintain a standard of service throughout all periods of fluctuating demand, as that way they retain a bank of satisfied customers on which to rely in the future.

The operative word here is try. Given the massive growth of ProtonMail, 'they' have an FAQ along with their customer service, but like I mention, need a forum as well to help take up the slack. Now if you think customer service is something of a standard by companies now-a-days you're highly mistaken. It's either outsourced or in large part doesn't exist, and that's true for a lot of companies. It's not how I would run things, but it's the sad state of affairs. Not all companies are like this. But again, emphasis on the massive growth ProtonMail has gained in such a short amount time and their ability to meet the depend you talk about. And no, it's not "fluctuating", it's rising exponentially. Also, this is NOT a ProtonMail issue at all. The code in the cab file is signed with SHA2 for YOUR security. Can you believe that? That way when you install it you can trust its source. You should also right click | view properties and check the signatures, and scan at Virus Total. Four hits you toss is the general consensus. You need to install that Windows update and when you do you'll have the Bridge working like me and everyone else. You're not solving for ∆V, or figuring out how to compute angular momentum as it applies to quantum mechanics. All you do is download the pointed out Windows update, double click, install, reboot, install the Bridge, configure the E-mail client. It isn't hard.

Now for some shellacking.

Now I tried to describe this and went above and beyond by pointing out some things about so-called "secure" email, yet I read here that I'm on a tirade? No, whether you like the tone of how I write is inconsequential. I, as well as Torchwood pointed you to the answer that you need an update to handle the SHA2 code signing of the cab file that's giving you the error. If you want to use your low IQ myopic understanding and slap the knowledge out of my hand then that's on you. But don't blame a company because of your own misunderstanding and then brew some conjecture on the matter and at the same time not heed the advice given. You already come across not being very computer savvy so you probably shouldn't use ProtonMail from the begin with. Especially thinking Windows 7 had a service pack 3. You think a 1x1 pixel canary token won't rat you out using ProtonMail? Do you even know what that is? Point made.

Please do not respond further to my post, as courtesy demands I must reply.

You bet your ass you'll respond. And it's not a matter of courtesy either. Because your holier than thou attitude clouds your better judgement withen the scope of the issue at hand.

Learn to read and read to learn. The first step to obtaining knowledge is knowing that you don't know.

Now I shall submit this post to the Wayback Machine for posterity and post it to my own website for the shits and giggles. Do you know what a Red Wood tree is? Don't bark up it. It's been around for a very, very long time and knows more than you think.
